Ok guys i said ill keep you updated on the ticking my 2000 4.7 motor is doing. Well I finally took it to the dealer and they looked and prodded. final diagnosis was the engine got overheated ( this engine has NEVER overheater) and the oil coked up ( hardened) and all and all the dealer said I need a new motor. the cost ( laugh really hard I did) 8000.00 $ installed. EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS.
I asked them how they came to that conclusion. they couldnt give me a answer. they said thats what the tech said.

Took it back after paying 200$ for the so called experts advice. Went to another place a buddy of mine recomended. the diagnosis bad lifters. The guy is doing all the lifters, new timing chains and guides heads reworked for 2000.00$

I told him to keep the parts cause Im going back to get my 200$ from the dealer for their BS diagnosis.

Hope this helps any of you guys who have a ticking 4.7. mine was on the driver side I believe the last 2 cylinders on the left bank

My 4.7L had the ticking sound but I have not heard it for at least the past 30k miles, a few thousand miles after I switched motor oils.

But if I remember correctly the ticking sound is no biggie. The only time I could hear it when I had it was when I had the hood up and idling.

There was a TSB for a ticking sound on the 4.7 back in 2000. It was when the first 4.7 Daks were rolling off the line. Then DC fixed the problem around mar 2000, I know because I bought mine at that time.

I was told by a few people that the ticking sound is the fuel injection system. I have the ticking sound and I have an 03 4.7. never noticed it until I had my hood up with it idling.the ticking sounds more electrical than mechanical on mine.

I have a 2000 4.7 that was built in March of that year. Around 65,000 it developed a minor tick on cold startup. Most people have said it's the valve lash adjusters.

Other than the ticking sound are you experiencing any drivability issue? such as Poor gas milage? Loss of power? Rough idle?

Are you sure the lifters really need replaced? I had several issues with my truck a few months ago. I took it to several different places. Noone could tell me what the problem was. One shop recommend I get a new engine - they said the would have to take the current one apart to find the EXACT cause of the problems, but it would be best to go ahead and replace it. The biggest issue I had was a ticking and rattling sound. Along with this, I got horrible gas milage (worse on highway than city). The rattling sound turned out to be the timing chain and replacing it fixed it. The ticking sound was the lifters. Ran a quart of transmission fluid through it per suggestion from yet a different shop. It helped it ALOT and improved my gas milage considerably. I went with then engine flush from pep boys, helped it even more. They told me they got alot of crud.

Turns out that I didn't need new lifters, the truck runs fine now and I'm getting 17mpg combined city/highway in atlanta rush hour traffic.

The last shop that recommened the transmission fluid now gets my business when I have to take the truck into a shop. I found them via the jasper engines website, they are a preferred installer. The guys are honest, willing to go the extra mile and always helpful.

Almost every v8 truck I've owned has had a slight ticking noise from time to time. Nothing serious sounding, but enough to tell at idle with the hood up. This includes my 2001 4.7. For some reason every few months it will tick for a while and then go away. I just chalk it up to the Cam, oil, a variety of factors that can change as driven. Never had any major problems from them.

This is a 2000 4.7 motor? Was it still under warranty? If so, they should have provided the work or a new motor for free. They would have to show evidence that it was damaged in order to deny warranty coverage, and you said they have none.

Make sure you tell them, and the zone manager, that you and everyone you can find to tell, will never go there again for anything. I've done that, sometimes they just don't care anyway, sometimes they'll try to make good.

I tried the flushing agents it made no difference. It used to be a light almost unnoticeable ticking but it got louder as time went on. I had no driveability issues but it got to the point where the ticking was so loud and annoying it started to sound liek a 76 buick thats been beat to death. The engine place thats doing the work is tickign me off the guy keeps calling and daying one more part one more day. I finally blew my stack today. told him he is one week overdue on the so called finish date and to get his ass in gear and get the friggin thing done. He knows Im mad. Im just waiting now hope he gets it done. Im pretty steamed right now

Sucks that you are so angry, been there before. I think most places take people for granted and alot of them think that if you bring them your vehicle, they think you are clueless about things.

Hope it works out for you! Pressure them at least for a discount! I got $600 worth of parts from one dealer before, I'll NEVER go back there again!

Thank you for your completely useless comment. You think trucks today are any different? Im assuming you drive a vehicle that has never broken down gets 40 MPG and looks better than anything on the road. I'd love for you to show me a vehicle today that has no problems no recalls or TSB's
