Subject: Quad Cab story for you!

Here's a little story I wanted to share with all of you Dakota friends out there.
I've had my 2000 Quad Cab 4x4 for just over a month and had a spray-in bedliner installed. My folks called me up to say they had purchased a new refridgerator from Circuit City, back when they were still selling them, and wanted to see if I could come to the Bellevue store to pick it up for them. "Sure!", I said. Time to test out this new truck and its new bedliner. I pulled up to the loading area in my shiny, black, quad cab only to notice the sheer envy of those around it. (Or at least I thought they were envious:))
I met up with my folks outside where behold, out comes this mammoth refridgerator! I believe it was the largest they carried at the time. Four young-men struggled to get it up into the bed and finished by moving it up against the rear of the cab. I asked if they had any rope. "This thing ain't goin' nowhere.", they said. I agreed that if I were to travel slow enough, this heavy appliance would fail to budge from its footprint.
I said 'thank you' and began following my folks home. Didn't have far to go, just a quick jump on 520, then I-405. We began our descent upon the freeway, via on-ramp, my parents pulling away as they sped up to 50 mph. I trailed at a starting pace of 35mph. I notice a newer, purple dodge caravan merging behind me as well. I feel a slight dip in the road through my front end and then with the tail end of my truck. Something felt strange for an instant. The rear of my truck failed to return to its original height as it usually would. In a matter of milli-seconds, the rear of the truck jumped up beyond its stock height at a now smooth 40mph. I watched in awe as the giant mass of a refridgerator began its ascent towards the clouds. There truly is nothing like reading the text running along the package's entirety as it lifts up from my bed just as a rocket-ship lifts from its launch pad. The refridgerator, now in mid-flight, was matching the current velocity of my truck for a few seconds, then proceeding to slow down. Undoubtedly from the poor aerodynamics of the 6 foot high shipping container. The bottom of the box clipped the tailgate as it entered the freeway on its own journey. The extraordinarily large box, tumbled like the die at a craps table. The minivan behind me swerved just as you see in those performance-cornering commercials, barely missing the box. With eyes as a possum in headlights, I gaze ahead only to see sudden brakelights from my parents' car. Then smoke and squealing from their tires as they proceed toward me at 40mph....in reverse.

The end of the story consists of my father and I frantically picking the container up with seemingly near-superhuman strength, throwing it in the bed and proceeding home. Needless to say, the appliance was damaged, Circuit City replaced it the next day free of charge, and I TIED THE SUCKER DOWN!

Jeff

No Dakotas were injured during these events...

Take care, guys!

Ha! Sorry - I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but as I read your post I had visions of "Planes, Trains & Automobiles"

That's hilarious! I can't believe you let them talk you into the mess of "this thing ain't going nowhere."

Looks like you learned your lesson and to trust your instincts and stay safe. You were right to tie it down and shoulda trusted yourself. Have fun with the DAk and glad to hear nobody got hurt. ;-)

I frequent 405 and 520 everyday! Sorry to say I must have missed that one on my commute! That had to pretty shocking. Costco has a 4pk of ratcheting tie down straps for a few bucks, good investment for a probably $1,000+ refridgerator. Used to live in Redmond, now out in Duvall.

I told the story to a friend. I received a premium set of ratcheting tie-downs for my birthday just following the incident. :-)

Blckdak, I head out on Woodinville-Duvall all the time to see my girlfriend. Honk if you see me, I'll do the same.

Drive safe!

Jeff

LOL!!! Jeff, you should pursue writing at least as a hobby if you haven't already. I've fallen for the "this stuff ain't goin' anywhere" phrase, but have been lucky enough that it really didn't!

I sit next to your mom at work Jeff..she had to share this with me! I give your story an enthusiastic two thumbs up! It was riveting and held me on the edge of my seat! My only regret was that I wasnt on 405 that day to see the first ever dakota powered rocket refrigerator in its maiden ( and hopefully final!) flight. That would have been one of those things that would have been great to catch on film with a camcorder and put on America's funniest home videos.
