Subject: 05 Dakota - 3.55 or 3.92 Diff?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking to buy the 2005 Dakota V8 Quad Cab.. SLT Plus pkg.
My question, 98% of my use for the truck will be daily driving. Mostly highway at around 50-60MPH. Occasionally I will do some towing (mostly empty or half empty grain wagons / fertilizer spreaders) couple times a year.

From doing research I know that getting the 3.92 gears will have an impact on gas mileage, around 1mpg. Is it worth going with these gears or should I just stay with the standard 3.55 set? I do know that the 3.55 diff would be able to handle any towing I am going to do.

I guess the bottom line is, am I going to be disappointed with the 3.55 and wish I ordered the 3.92?

Get the 3.92, hands down, no decision. I wish I had them in my truck but I bought this one used.

I have the 3.92 in my 03, 5.9,4X4, AWD QC and love it. The thing hardly ever has to downshift and I live in NW PA with lots of hills. I can go up a grade like 38 mph in OD. I get over 16mpg with AC during mild months, 13-14 in winter. This is decent mileage for that power plant, but have to admit I am considering bailing because of fuel prices now!

The only reason I was considering the 3.55's is because of the gas prices right now. We are at .82 cents a liter right now in Windsor, Ontario Canada.
Ill be getting the 4x2 model. Hopefully I can get close to 20mpg highway.

I am gonna get a tonneau on it and run mobile 1 synthetic. Ive heard that by running the synthetic and replacing the diff fluid with redline synthetic you can gain a couple MPG's

Looks like I will be ordering the truck with 3.92's on Monday. Thanks for the feedback, this site has been a great source of information.

I have had two nearly identical trucks. I had another '02, same setup as the one I have now but with 3.92 gears stock. When both trucks were bone stock, I got .5 mpg better mileage with the 3.92 truck.

I can see having 3.92 gears for mixed driving, but if his truck is going to be doing mostly highways k's wouldn't 3.55 gears be better?? I have 3.55 gears on my Dak, because I do 85% highway driving. I just wished I had a 6-th gear, on my manual.

Lawrence, don't forget to get LSD Anti-slip diff with the gears you pick. It's a must have!!!

I looked into it, todays exchange rate is @ 1.22 across the border its around 2.07/Gal which works out to about .67 cents a liter compared to my canadian .80 cents/Liter, last week it was down to .68 cents here but I am told its probally going to stay around .80 or go even higher during the summer.

Fuel prices seem to fluctuate right now between mid 60's and 80's, I will go to work in the morning and see the gas prices high and come home and prices are low again. Sometimes up to 20 cents difference in a day!

I dont live close to the border, its about 30min away from where I live, so I have to take into account the driving time, sitting at the border waiting to cross, cost to cross the border and current exchange rate. etc.

In the end I am not too far ahead, If I were to drive over there every couple weeks it would be worth it but I go once a year, if that.

I've got an 01, 4.7, manual(thank god), and w 3.55 LSD. I like it. The auto seems to have a ;onger 1st gear, making the 3.92 auto 1st, about like the manual 3.55 1st.

I Get great MPG, and it's a HEAVY, loaded QC. With still good power to tow my 20ft sailboat and gear trailer.

But, I may too switch one day to the dark side, and get some 3.92's- low priority for me however.

If you're getting that electronic auto-def. the 3.92's.

I've got a '01 4.7 5-spd RC 3:92 LSD with 255/55/17 tires. I get about .5 mpg better in the city than on the highway. Of course, with a manual, you are in total control of engine rpm around town.

I will be getting the automatic transmission(5-45RFE). I have a manual tranny in my current car and I like it but my fiance complains she cant drive it (unwilling to learn).

I test drove the Dakota with the automatic and I felt it did a good job.

Will you be able to pull the "unwilling to change bit" when your fiance (eventual wife) wants you to do something you're unwilling to do? "Hey babe, I bought an automatic truck for you..."

I bought an 05 Dakota off of the lot almost exact to what you ordered-Patriot Blue/Slate Grey, Quad Cab, 4.7 V8, 5sp Auto (live 650 miles from prefered dealer, to hard to hassle with ordering one). The only difference is in the gears. Love the truck, get 20+mpg on the highway running 65-70mph. Only thing I hate so far is that it pulls like s**t. Think I will have 3.92s or better put in to help the towing out.

The Patriot Blue is the best color they have ;)

Weird. My 4X4 pulls awesome!
Maybe the new tranny programming sucks?
I'd be curious to see how much better the 4.10's would do compared to my 3.55's.
