I am replacing the upper control arm bushings, and the upper ball joint WILL NOT budge out of the stearing knuckle. the bolt is loose, I could use a pickle fork, but I don't want to destroy the bj grease boot. I have used pry bars, sledge hammers with no luck any suggestions anyone?

if you have an o'reilly's or auto zone near by go get a tie rod separator. looks almost like a gear puller. no chance to damage the boot and it works really well.

Thanks, I do, I'll check it out, will a gear puller work? I was going to try it, but I can't put it on the stud part of the ball joint, it won't fit, I'm hoping then, that the tie rod separator can work from the top?

not the top. you'll have to go from below the control arm so the stud on the separator will contact the stud of the balljoint. but it is pretty compact so you shouldn't have any trouble fitting it in there.

get two hammers and hit the little knuckle on the spindle where the balljoint goes in. Hit them at the same time from opposite directions... like clapping your hand

give that a few hits and it will jump out.

suggestions..

let the suspension hang in the air (nothing under the lower control arm) while seperating the top balljoint from the spindle and put a jack under the lower control arm while trying to seperate the lower balljoint.
