Subject: just replace gasket or get m1?

My goal is to get rid of the pinging and missing in my 99 Dakota 4x4 with the 318. My engine is definitely using oil, too. I looked down the TB with a flashlight today, and I see a film but it's the color of light syrup like new oil, not black like burnt oil. If this means my intake manifold gasket is blown, it looks like I'll need the Mopar Performance Gasket Set - Mopar Part # P4876049.

Will that fix the problem permanently? Should I consider getting the MPI (M1 2bbl intake) - Mopar Part # P5007398? I called my local dealership and they told me it has a new part number, # 5007852. I know I'll also if I go this route I'll need the install kit and some assorted tools and accessories.

Someone please let me know if I have the right part numbers, and considering my goals if I should just replace the gasket or go for the MPI.

Thanks.

If your goal is simply to replace the vacume leak, then buy the gasket kit, or the kit from Hughes and others, and be done with it. If your goal is a package of parts to increase upper rpm performance, then start with the M1. The M1 by itself won't make enough power improvement to make it worth the money, IMO.

I put an M1 on mine instead of jacking with the gasket. I was happy with the increase. Also keep in mind other benefits the M1 has that are not performance oriented. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to work on the top end, and changing out the cap/rotor is a snap compared to blindly doing it behind the stock keg. It is also a little easier to clean the top of the engine as well. I ported my TB as well which really helped out.

Cheack out www.mopartsracing.com. That is where I bought mine from last year. Sam at socaldakota also has some good prices too.

I'd get the M1 but for I don't know how much longer I'll have the truck since I plan to have kids in the next two or three years. The gasket kit is only $30 or so. The Hughes reinforced belly pan is $80. Should I spend the extra $80 to make sure this problem never comes back again? Or will using quality gaskets alone ensure that?
