There are plenty of web sites that can explain the tire sizing in great detail. But here's a quick run down on your current tire size.

256: Width of tread or cross section in mm. This is a little variable from one manufacturer to another. Actual foot print may vary.

65: aspect ratio. The sidewall of the tire is 65% of the width.

16: Wheel diameter.

As for spacers, they do exactly what you think they do. Space the wheel out further from the hub. Sometimes needed, usually not. If you need more than about 1/4", you'll probably need longer wheel studs. Some spacers are very thick, like 1"+. These bolt on to thefactory lugs, and then have lugs of their own.

thanks .bob the width of the tire is what always gets me it seems some tires that are a 225 are wider than a 255 so the width would be the the actual width of the tire not the footprint? the footprint is what im looking for im by far not good with tires normally i just buy a little bigger than stock but i want to try something different by installing spacers and wider tires i think it would look good and handle very well. now the wheel spacers are they safe? do they make your tires wear funney? do you have problems with alighnment? thank guys for the help i want to do what im gonna like!

Tire width and footprint really don't seem to match up from one manufacturer to another, and one tire type to another. Sometimes tire makers will actually advertise their foot print width, and that's usually pretty close.

Spacers are generally used when custom wheels are installed that don't have enough back space, so you add a spacer to move the center of the wheel outboard.

If you add a tire that's, say, 1" wider than stock, you may have clearance issues with your inner fender panels. That's 1/2" wider inner and outer. So you add a 1/2" spacer to move the inside of the tire outboard. But it also moves the outside of the tire outboard, so now you have clearance issue with the fender lip because it's 1" further outboard than stock.

Are you sure you want wider tires if you want something "that will drive in snow and heavy rain" ? Wider tires aren't the answer to that.

I run P275/60-16 Pirelli Scorpions to replace the original P255/65-16. Great in rain and dry. I haven't tried them in the snow, but according to Tire Rack reviews, they aren't too good in snow. I have a completely different set of tires/wheels for snow use.

Then check out something like Goodrich AT and don't go too wide. You'll need an agressive tread to go any wider without giving up bad weather traction.

Might want to think about looking on ebay for a extra set of dak rims, can pick them up real cheap. then just buy a set of winter tires and a set of performance tires for summer then you can swap them out depending on season. Thats what I did but I went to a 18" for for my summer set! Try tirerack.com and discounttire.com they have calculators where you can figure just about everything into it!

To install tires wider than the wheels, does not improve handling or stability of a vehicle. As a matter of fact, it will degrade performance because now, the tires are not tight around the rims(bulging) and they will "dance" side to side (rolling around themselves) on every turn. A tire that is too wide will cause the vehicle to be very darty and the impression that you will have is like a car with very low tire pressure.
As too the tire ratio, choose accordingly with your preference. Asphalt = lower profile and off road = higher profile. Good luck.
