Subject: OH NO!! Check Engine light came on!

So yesterday coming home from work I seemed to notice that when I was trying to accelerate on the freeway that my Dakota didn't seem to have quite the power that I'm used to and the engine sounded a little funny.

I didn't think too much of it and thought I was probably overreacting.

This morning on my way into work I noticed the exact same thing. The truck is able to get up speeds and whatnot but the acceleration is slow and the engine is making wierd noises, almost like it's groaning. There's a couple big hills I have to go up and while doing so the truck usually just powers right up with no problem at all. Today the truck pretty much couldn't get above 40 km/h and did not sound good! On the second hill the same thing happened and the "Check Engine" light came on.

I have a 99 5.2L CC Dakota. Obviously I am going to be taking it in to the dealer now, but does anyone have any clues as to what this might be? I'm very nervous as th eextended warranty I bought expires in about 10 days.

This could be .... the cat started making very wierd noises a while back and the dealership would not replace because they said it hadn't completely blown out...

all the clowns that answered before me are mostly if not completly wrong. The check engine light comes on when the computer recieves an "out of range" electronic signal from any or all of the feedback sensors used for ignition management. it could be a bad O2 sensor a TPS sensor, an AIT not working, a IATemp sensor the engines cooling thermostat could be bad and staying open and the engine runs cold too long an engine misfire caused by crank sensor cam sensor, plugs, plug wires, fuel injector, coil, a faulty distributor or a whole lot more. Take it to AutoZone and the will put a scan tool on it for FREE!. and tell you what it is, or where to start looking for the problem.
