What does the symbol look like, or does it just say check engine? what year and model is your truck? if it is the check engine light, that could mean a whole bunch of things, but if it does say check engine i would start by checking your gas cap, solved my problem when that damn light came on. anyway let me know because i have my manual handy if needed.

Are you the first owner of the truck? may just need to change the transmission fluid, or add some for that matter, how many miles are on the truck and when was the last time the transmission fluid was changed, you might want to check on all of these things and if you still cannot come up with any sort of a remedy then you should prolly take it to a mechanic if it is shifting hard like that.
