Subject: 5.2 burning oil...

Greetings,

Just bought (2 weeks) a 98 4x4 ext cab 5.2L, 5spd Dakota with 80k on it. I have since found that it burns oil like crazy, about 4 quarts every 1000 miles. The dealer will look at the intake manifold for free because I made a big deal about it, but that is about it. Bought it 'as is' because of the high miles and they keep telling me that when I call. Any idea what could be the prob here? Doesn't drip a drop, has a lot of power, and doesn't smoke while driving; at least not that I can see while driving. There is a small puff of blue smoke at every start up. My little bro is desiel mechanic, he thinks it may be valve seals. We haven't pulled it apart yet, going to let the dealer do that tomorrow. Does it sound like the engine has some life in it yet or is it junk? I want to get all of the opinions I can before the dealer gives me a big load of crap. Thanks for your help.

Two things cause oil consumption like that. 1)Valve guides worn. 2)Piston rings worn. If it still has plenty of power I would quess that it is valve guides. If the rings were worn that bad the truck would be a real dog(no power). It could be stuck rings as well. I have an associate at work that bought a used vechile and it had an oil consumption problem. He tore the engine apart and found that most all of the rings where glued to the piston with heavy varnish. He cleaned up the pistons and rings and measured the end gap and they spec.'ed out fine. He re installed the pistones and rings and the engine was fine from their on out. It turned out that the previous owner used to add a can of the no-smoke stuff each oil change and that is what glued the rings to the piston.

I just got done browsing the dealer recalls area and found that this is a common problem. There is a TSB for it. The intake gasket leaks and needs to be replaced. I'll take this info into the dealer and see what they say. The dealer said they would look at the intake so I am guessing that is the problem. Nice of them to know that this is a problem and then just sell the truck anyway without checking it out. Thanks for the reply sandman, I'll keep that in mind if the intake gasket problem falls through.

Just got a call from the dealer and my truck is done. It was the intake manifold gasket. They weren't going to do anything for free until I told them that I found a TSB that pretty much described my problem. They looked it up and checked some database and then said that it was covered 100% because we bought it recently. We were pretty happy when we heard this. Gives me back this weekend which I had planned on using to replace the gasket myself if they weren't going to cover it. Thanks,

Shawn
