I was in some mud this past weekend when my truckstarted sputtering and lost power. It ended up completely quitting. Now it doesn't run right at all. In neutral(5 speed man. trans.) I can rev it up without problem. However, in gear when I push the accelerator to the floor there is a grinding sound; metal to metal and the truck backfires. I am hoping it is nothing major, but it sounds awful.

Yep. You broke it.
Does this noise happen in all forward gears?
Does it happen in reverse gear?
Only under acceleration?
When you down-shift?
More details needed.

And what circumstance, other than racing, would make you want to push the accelerator to the floor?
Maybe that's what broke it.
