Subject: one brake light not working

2001 dakota. The driver side brake light doesnt light up, all the other lights work, the bulb is good, and I even switched the unit that the bulb clips into with the other side. The Problem remains on the driver side. I don't think the problem is a fuse because all the brake lights are on the same fuse. I also know that this problem has occured on a 2002 dakota that my friend owns, and was fixed under warrenty. I cant get in touch with him to find out what the problem was. Any ideas?

Does the turn signal for that side work?

Do you have a tow package? If so, could be bad connection in the wiring for that. It taps off the rear light wiring.

Yeah, all the turn signals work, and the reverse lights, and the tail lights. But when apply the brakes only the passenger side and the third brake light come on. I don't have the tow package but I do have an aftermarket harness attached for a small trailer. Maybe the next thing I will try is to disconnect the trailer wiring harness and connect the wires back to the stock setup. Thanks for the suggestion, I hope thats all it is.

The reason I asked about the turn signal is that it uses the same bulb filament as the brake light. If the rear driver's side turn signal is flashing, the bulb is definitely good, and the problem is in the brake light wiring.
Just a verification test to narrow things down, is all.

Hey Randy ive got a 99 with the same problem, i changed bulbs and fuses to no avail. It sucks because ive gotten pulled over for it twice. I dont want to take it to the stealership so they can screw me either. Let me know what works for you so i can try it also.

I don't think it's got to do with the trailer wiring harness- I went under it last night (in the snow) and without messing with anything I looked at where the trailer wiring is plugged in. It wasn't an in-line connection, it just plugged into an existing lead from the factory. I don't see how that could be causing the problem since it is downstream of the brake lights. I didn't try disconnecting it because I couldn't feel my fingers. Keith you are the third person I know of who has had this problem, so there's a good chance there's a factory TSB on this. I will try to dig around online throughout the day to see what I can find, post if you find something.

Look for wire damage or corrision under the truck. I had a taillight that went out but the brake light still worked. I could not figure out what was wrong and it ended up being a broken wire where it runs above the spare tire. Good luck.

Hi, I recently put a flatbed on my 2002 Dakota and when I
plugged taillights back in, the left brake doesn’t turn on. The
turn signal does and so does reverse. Anyone who can help?
