Subject: 93 5.2 Belly Pan Gasket
IP: Logged

Message:
Truck has 140,000 kms. When I look down past the throttle body into the intake, I see what appears to be a very thin film of oil, not a puddle as other posters have said. Plus the fact the truck consumes 1 litre of oil every 2000 kms, does anyone think the belly pan gasket is gone? I did do the vacuum test as out lined in speedtweaks, and it passed the test. Any help much appreciated.

Chances are it is gone. I drove my 92 for a while with a blown gasket. By the time I got around to changing it the inside of the manifold was completely black. It had 186k miles on it at the time. If it is consuming oil that would be my first guess. They all fail, just a matter of time.

You can also do a compression test to determine if your rings are bad or valve seals are leaking.

Thanks Sneezer. I think I will just bite the bullet and do it.

Who sells the best repair kit?

Hughes Engines or APS Precision. Both sell a kit with a billet plate to replace the stock steel one. This will almost eliminate the possibility of it blowing again, since the steel plate is the main cause for the failure. Cost is about $100.

Other option is to get an M1 intake. About $400-450 with install kit and gaskets. No more belly pan, better performance, looks better and makes it a little easier to work on the engine, especially around the distributor.
