Subject: how much friction modifier?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm about to change my diff. fluid and was wondering how much of the Mopar friction modifier I need to add. It says "apply 2-5% by gear lubricant weight" on the bottle but what in the hell does that mean?

Is it necessary to add modifier if you buy the oil with it already added?

Thanks guys... guess the whole 4oz. bottle is going in. QQQ... some will say yes and some will say no. I bought Mobil 1 syn. gear oil and the bottle says it's formulated for LSD systems but I'm adding the modifier just to be safe. I guess if you dont have excessive whirring or gear noise you're alright, but if you get some sounds back there, I'd add it.

I am running the AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w-140 in my 95' SC 2wd
open differential and in my 98' Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel with the
3:55 anti-slip rear end.

The AMSOIL Severe Gear is the only lubricant that I have ever
used and been 100% satisfied with.

AMSOIL also makes a friction modifier "AMSOIL Slip Lock" that
cost about $5.50 per 4 oz. bottle.

I have used this product in the past but have not needed it yet
since switching to the "Severe Gear" formula.

I keep a bottle handy just in case those clutches start acting up
one day.

"too much additive can cause slippage or hanging between shifts. It is similar to those people who over add FM's to their LSDs and wonder why they don't get power to both wheels on slippery surfaces."

If the gear lube states you don`t need to add a FM you might want to wait for symptoms before adding more FMs.
