Hi,
I just had both front brake hoses replaced on my 143,000 mile 98 Dak and put new pads on and can't seem to get the pedal up. It's way to soft and dangerous. Two payments left and it's all mine.
It has rear ABS only. At the garage they did the 22 pumps then bled the system twice.
He then put line clamps on the front hoses and the pedal was rock hard, meaning the rear brakes are adjusted up and no air in the lines.
The new front lines are Bendix and I got them from JC Whitney because nobody around here could get them, besides, they were lass than half the price.
Any help would be appreciated.

Iv'e got the same problem with my 97 after installing the rancho brake lines from their lift kit. Clamped the front lines and the pedal is mint unclamp it and back to sponge bob brake pedal. If anyone had this and fixed it let us know. Sure would be nice to be confident when hitting the brakes again.

Have you guys tried bleeding the master cylinder separately before bleeding the lines? If not, then would recmd doing so. Other than that, thats all I could think of unless, (BMac) maybe you have a bad caliper?

You could be right but I see no reason the master needs to be bled, it was never tapped.
As for the caliper being bad, it's only a couple years old.
The pedal was hard after bleeding the rear but softer after the front was bled, then I started the engine the down the pedal went, almost to the floor.

Yeah, I would then try bleeding the mastercylinder then all the lines again, make sure you do them in sequence! (farthest from m/c to the the closest.) Hopefully that will do it.
Even though you never opened the lines at the mc it could have still got air from when the lines where disconnected. Try bleeding the mc and let me know how it goes.

I tried bleeding the master and all the lines like my manual explains but still the same pedal. The brakes still work ok, but I have to push real hard compared to before and the pedal is very low even when the back brakes have just been adjusted. Just seems odd that changing brake lines could have this effect.

The owner of the garage that did mine said that maybe the new hoses were expanding under pedal more that the stock ones. I bought Bendix ones, it was a prefered brand. If they expend, won't they bust after a while?

That is exactly what my father thinks about my brakes too. I was hoping that someone else with different brake lines would have said they had the same problem. Guess we'll have to live with it. Maybe if i'm lucky I can get a rear disc conversion this summer. The fact that I have the small drums on the back doesnt help either. Thanks for the help guys.

I've been through this drill many times with my old '94 Dakota. Anytime I've had the brake system open, replacing calipers, brake lines, master cylinder, (twice), I've ended up with a ton of air in the system. I'm not exactly sure why but I usually will go through almost a gallon of brake fluid before I get a stiff pedal again. All I can tell you is don't get frustrated and give up on it to soon!

So I geuss we need to just keep bleeding? To bad there isn't a way to bleed the system with force, pressure on the master or something of that sort.

Actually there is a way to do that, but its done with suction at the bleeder valve.

The place where I got mine done said that he could power bleed the system. Guess I'll have to take him up on that.

Let me know if it works out with bleeding them that way and how much it costs. Dont know were your from but I'm in Unionville CT. Hope I can find somone to do the same if it works for you. Has anyone installed the rear disc brake conversion or their daks? If so how well does it work compared to the drums. Just wondering if it's worth all that coin for the setup.

Just a thought, but if you had both calipers off at the same time, make sure they didn't get swapped right to left. They will bolt on to the wrong side but the bleeder srew will end up at the bottom trapping air at the top of the cylinder.
