i was leaving work today, got in the truck, turned the key, and the lock cylinder just spun. it went all the way forward very loosely. when the key is turned all the way forward, the ignition comes on. it will not engage the starter. does anyone know what is causing this? i have a haynes manual, which says that there is a rod that connects the cylinder to the ignition relay, which is located in the steering column. im thinking that the rod may have come off of the cylinder, which would let it spin without engaging the starter. can anyone diagnose my problem before i rip out the darned steering wheel?

Do you think it's possible somebody tried to steal it? I've never heard of something like that before. Seems wierd.

What year?

Don't think you have a rod-actuated switch, unless you have an older Dakota - believe most of them now have the lock cylinder directly attached to the ignition switch itself (my '95 does).

Sounds like you may have an internal problem with the keylock, or the actual mechanical connection between the lock cylinder and switch has come apart. In the meantime, since you are getting lights on the dash, you can turn the key forward, leave vehicle in park, and jump past the relay (with key on) to start the vehicle. Cheaper than a tow....

I'm not sure how applicable this is but my '73 Cougar had a problem like that. It started as just being able to turn the key on but not get start out of it, so I started it with a bolt shorting between two of the solenoid's terminals for a month. (I didn't really want to tear the steering column or dash apart as long as I could still use a workaround to drive.) Eventually I lost the ability to turn the ignition on. Replacing the ignition switch fixed it.
