Went to the dealership today and got my ball joints replaced and and also had my airbag, horn, and cruise control looked at and they told me that the clock spring was bad. My question is what is a clock spring and where is it.

The clockspring is inside the steering wheel. Essentially it is a guide for the wiring to allow it to turn with the steering wheel.

Now, for the question back to you. Why did you have them look at the airbag, horn etc.? I have an 02 QC AWD and had a "clicking" noise when turning the steering wheel to the right. The dealer replaced the clockspring, which did not fix the click, and kept trying the "it's normal" line.

After some more _discussion_ with the service manager, they ended up replacing the steering rack, which fixed the clicking problem.

It's located in the steering wheel. It's another known issue with Dakotas.

Air bag lite, horn inop, and cruise inop all indicative or shorted clockspring. All steering wheel electrical controls run through the clockspring (horn/cruise), and the airbag lite is probably popping a code for drivers side module (bag).

They're not feeding you pasture-patties on this one.... :-)

I guess after 20 years of making vehicles with airbags they still can't figure it out. The clockspring on my 2004 QC made a crunching sound on a hard RH turn pulling off the dealer lot when I first picked it up. Now the airbag light comes on whenever I make a RH turn anywhere close to full lock, sometimes it stays on for miles. I have no choice now but to take it to the dealer but I know that's going to be an ordeal.

Had my work's autoshop change out my clock spring in order
to keep the students busy. I'm hindsite I should have done it
myself, just would have had to borrow a puller from autozone.
In hind-site I should have done it myself since one of the
students decided to use an impact to put the column bolt back
on and in the process sheared off the bolt They were able to
remove the broken bolt with a hammer and chisel and get it
back together. However my steering wheel in now about 45
degrees crooked counter clockwise proud. I was told that
wheel itself is supposedly keyed and not splined like I've seen
in other vehicles I've worked on previously. Or in other words it
only goes back on one way. Any ideas why it is crooked and
ways to remedy this issue. It also causes the signals to not
work correctly since the wheel is not centered.
