It's the rear end gear ratio. To make it simple.. The 3.55 is a higher gear meaning that you will go say 60mph with a lower RPM, therefore giving you better gas mileage. The 3.92 is a lower gear and while it will be turning higher RPM's at that same 60mph, you'll have more low end power.

BASICALLY, if you are going to do a lot of towing or light to light accelerating (racing) the 3.92 is a better choice, otherwise the 3.55 will be the gear for you.

I was going to say that the 3.55's are less harsh on the engine generally because of the lower RPMs but then 43 guys would have jumped in to say "yeah but the lugging you'll experience is actually harder on your engine blah blah blah. And while true to an extend, the rule of thumb I laid out above should be enough info to get you by..

Hey james 242, when offering an answer to a question it's usually helpful to at least somewhat know what you're talking about. Both ratios are available in both 4x4 and 4x2.

FYI - starting with the 2005 Dakota the 3.92 gears are only available (as an option) on 4x4s when trying to build one at Dodge's web site. And how is this a good thing DC?
