That right there is the smartest thing I've seen on this thread. So Toyota is foreign that came here, and DC is domestic that got bought from a foreign company, even though still made in america. Thus making DC vehicles foreign to OTHER countries, not here, in the exact same way Toyota is said to be foreign here. This is pretty easy to understand I would assume.

Even though who cares where the truck originated, so long as it can do what you need it to.

That dude is damn stupid.

I beleive Deerridge pulls 8,000 Lbs and has had 1500 in his bed (he never said both at the same time!)
I've had 25+ bags of 80Lb concrete in my bed. It was a LOT but got it home just fine. the guys loading it at Lowe's thought it was insane loading that into my Dak!

A TOY would have left the concrete AND it's bed busted off and laying on the asphault before ever making it home!

Toungue weight???

I'd DARE someone to put 8,000 Lbs on a trailer and strap that to a little Taco. It would hardly move it 9show the 280HP rating is a joke) and not be able to stop it safely not too mention that weight would probably shove the Taco off of the road way in a turn!!!

I bought a 2000 Dakota 4X2, 4.7 V8, 5 speed manual, in June of 2000, the only time that it has been back to the dealer is when its due for routine maintenance, I perform all the oil changes and inspections before it even goes, the only thing replaced has been the tires, I put 70R15's from Big 'O' tires less than 5k miles ago.

I average 18mpg, have loaded it with 1900 lbs of lanscaping rock (3 times), 2000 lbs of river rock, and have done other loads, the truck has always driven well, No sign of ball joint troubles or brake troubles, or any other trouble. And the truck was rear-ended in 2002, and the dealership repaired it well.

P.S.- I am 46. I have been mechanically inclined since 10, and it is my vote that a dakota would be well worth your investment.

this is a no brainer! what do you want out of a truck?

toyota= better gas milage, more money for the truck, little less towing compacity, little less room, good dependability

dakota=bang for buck, good power & speed, bad gas milage, and decent dependability.

if you work very much or pull much go with the dak. If your a poser who wants a truck to say he has one or to throw a piece of wood in the back and get the tacoma.

In 4X4 mag I read today. It said that the 05 Dakota's 4.7L V8 was outgunned by Toyota's and Nissan's V6's. Toyota's new 4.0L V6 produces 245HP and 292 ft lbs. Thats more HP and a few ft lbs less than the Dakota's 4.7L V8. With Toyota making a more powerfull V6. I think it's time for the 5.7 HEMI to be optional. After all it is a killer engine. The 300C and the Grand Cherokee are really sweet with the HEMI.

I have a Dak but I am tired of all the little things that go wrong with it. Also the gas mileage blows with the v8. I really don't need a v8 as I don't tow anything or haul anything more than my fat arse lol. I really think I will try a taco 4x4 I like the fact that it already sits pretty high. I will see if the hype about the toys are for real.

I do gotta say tho, the old toyotas will run forever. my uncle had one with like 350,000 miles on it or something, and he used it everyday as a work truck. but i've also noticed something else about that truck, IT WAS HORRIBLE TO SIT IN. the seats were as thick as my finger, and had no room. and as for gas mileage, anybody can get good gas mileage if you drive it the right way. my dad can get over 20 mpg in anything. his F150 gets like 22 mpg with the 4.6 when he drives it. when i drive it, it gets what it should, like 12 mpg. so it is possible to have your dak, and great gas mileage. and as for stuff wearing out, that's what its supposed to do. if it wasn't, they wouldn't make REPLACEMENT parts. and besides, what's the fun in driving it if you never get to work on it? kinda takes away part of the fun.

Why do people think that ONLY Toyota's run up to 300k miles?

People drive the PISS out of 3/4 and 1 ton chevy and Ford vans around here loaded to max and floored from light to light (company supplied vehicles, lik mine) and they run them 150K miles easy before they get rid of them (still runing and not smoking) and they only usually get new fuel pumps and normal stuff.

My friend has two Astro Van 4.3 liter's with 300k miles on each of them (were used by his mom's flower shop and drove all over the mountains and to Phoenix balls to the wall) and they are still running and now have ladder racks on them and all. They are worn but still run. We just installed a new injector into one yesterday.

Ford 351 and 302's ran 300K miles easily usually only needing a timing chain half way through that. Same thing for Dodge 318 and 360's all made before the R20/22 even existed.

Now it's not even a fair comparison because those American engines where known to be ABUSED well beyond what they were intended for. Toyota's usually were never used for severe duty! They were "TOY's".

My step daughter bought a '99 Tacoma 2wd truck as her first vehicle. It was a lease return with about 33k miles on it. It had a 4 cyl, PS, PB, Auto and A/C. It was in good shape when she got it.

She put about 30k on it before she got rid of it. I thought about buying it from her, because I needed a truck, but didn't because I didn't like her truck. Here are some of the reasons why:

1) Rode rough for a 2wd.
2) Seat was very uncomfortable and had no rake adjustment.
3) Even though the engine was tuned up properly, the 4 cyl was rough like a tractor engine.
4) Throttle body needed cleaning every 10k miles or the throttle would stick just off idle.
5) The heater control knob would hang up and not engage the defrosters. Toyota wanted $400 to fix.

She traded the truck on a Sebring Convertible. I now have a '04 CC 4X4 4.7L Dakota that I'm very happy with. It's a whole different truck. I know the '05's are redesigned, but I sure wasn't impressed with the '99's.

I'm with you hmmmmm. Don't want a 05 Dakota, and CERTAINLY don't want a spam can sh*t box Toyota!!!

Gonna drive this '03 until it's un repairable!
That would mean either it burns to the ground, or it gets smashed to bits by something larger in the food chain (certainly NOT a Toyota)!

Hey Graphite Dick ...er... I mean Dak,

You said "Quote": "Gonna drive this '03 until it's un repairable!"

I guess that means you'll be getting a new truck by the end of the year ... it has already lasted more than the average Dak, before major drive train trouble sets in (2 years).

LMFAO! Graphite...you should post links to your off-roading videos on here. And then I'd like to see some video clips of "Toyota Boy" doing the same thing. Betcha $50 his truck would go into the mud great...but wouldn't be so pretty coming out. And I ain't talking bout being covered in mud.

I agree with you GB2000. some of graphite dak vids are great. I know I wouldnt take my dak where he goes. and mine and his daks are almost the same. besides his mods and rear end. but I know a taco wouldnt get half way through before sinking to the bottom lol.

Okay, this should pretty much end this argument.
I just pulled a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 out of a snow and mud situation at a nearby construction site.
I've a 2001 QC 4x4 with a Powertrax no-slip in the rear.
I don't think the Taco was a TRD version , but who cares?
Point is he couldn't get out and the Dakota went in, hooked him up and got itself and the Toy out, PERIOD.
Happened yesterday ...think I'll leave the mud on the truck for a few days, it looks good on it.

A little clarification note. MY hay wagon is a sixteen foot flatbed trailer for hauling on the road not a true haywagon. It weighs about 2500 empty. Great for tractors, my Rx7 or 110 bales of hay weighing 50-80 lbs each. YOu do the math. I also pull a three horse trailer weighing 3500 empty with one to three horses (1100 plus each) and associated gear. My little Dakota's never even had a hiccup with those loads.
