Any one flushed their power steering out? if so, what fluid did you use? Is there anything other we can use instead of the expensive "chrysler" pwr steering fluid that won't hurt the power steering system?
thx for you time guys!

I don't know if you would call it a "flush", but...
I used a small hand pump to remove all the fluid,
then filled. After a few days of driving I pumped
it again. I did this until the fluid in the tank
was clean and clear.
SEA FOAM TRANS-TUNE can be used to clean, but I
have not tried it.

if I had my owner's manual here in front of me I'd check first before asking, but since I don't...

is a power-steering fluid flush part of regular scheduled maintenance? if so, when? if it's not, why flush and replace?

maybe related, but recently after driving for awhile there's a noticiable sound whenever I turn the steering wheel right or left. it's not extremely loud, just a very noticiable rubbing type sound. it doesn't happen when the truck is cold or if I've only driven a short time. it's only noticiable after I've driven for awhile. I checked the power steering fluid when I first noticed the sound, and it was just a little low, so I topped it off. that didn't make any difference in the sound. I did notice the fluid in the truck was not nearly as clean as the new fluid I added. I figured this was normal.

Any ideas about this sound when turning? I'm thinking power-steering pump...

rj, I have not seen anything in my manual '00, but It is good to do a flush to keep the fluid somewhat clean. By flushing the fluid it keeps your lines lasting longer and as well as your p/s pump, rack and pinion etc. keeping you p/s fluid clean is just as critical as keeping you engine oil clean (doing oil changes). Same with your differential, brake fluid,Coolant.

Yeah, it's pretty easy. I jacked the front of the truck up and disconnected the pressure and return lines off the rack, let the pump drain and slowly turned the steering wheel from left to right (with the engine off) to purge the fluid from the rack. Connect the hoses back up, fill with ATF+4, start the truck and top off the fluid as it gets drawn into the rack while working the steering from left to right. 2 quarts should do the job. (A large kitty litter pan works great to catch the fluid, $2 at wally world)

Since my P/S fluid was realy dark and disgusting and, I refilled with some ATF+3 that was in the garage and slowly worked the steering for 10 minutes to get all the funk suspended in the ATF+3, then drained again. Then, I refilled the P/S with Asmoil Universal ATF since I was doing the P/S flush at the same time as the tranny flush.

70K later I totalled the truck, but the P/S fluid was still nice and clean thanks to Asmoil ATF. I have only had my 03 for a month, but it's getting a complete Amsoil treatment in a couple of weeks; oil, ATF, diff lube and P/S fluid.
