ok, i dont want to sound stupid but i have a question about my 4wd. the owners guide says that it can only be engaged on slippery surfaces like ice, snow, gravel, and mud. but i was wondering if you could also engage it in the rain. i sorta have a heavy foot at stop lights and the back likes to kick around on me a little. so would i be hurting anything if i turn the 4wd on in the rain or is that included in "slippery conditions".

You can turn it on on dry pavement - as long as you don't make any turns.

For the front axle to operate correctly, it has to slip a little. With the transfer case activated it tends to bind in the corners, and you'll feel the steering wheel and the front of the tunk jump a jerk. That harsh treatment will eventually break something - usually the most expensive and difficult to get at part.

Sometimes wet streets will allow enough slippage to work correctly, and sometimes not. There are a lot of factors involved there. Rather than break something expensive, why not just buy better tires? Or add a little weight in the back?

Bob suggestion is great. Only engae it when you are talking about situations when the front and back tires can slip a bit. Probably should not be being too silly in the wet weather anyway. 4x4 ony on Off road, snow or ice. Keep your truck working well.

I have been a bad boy and used mine in the rain. It's like "holy sh*t" traction from a stop!

Bad thing was yesterday I thought my truck felt funny on the way home but thought nothing of it. Until I made a sharp turn in front of my house to get ready to back into my drive way. The truck binded up so bad it didn't want to move.

Somehow the switch got bumped into 4HI but didn't notice when!!!!
And it was ALL DRY pavement driving!

just take it easy in the rain. you dont always have to floor it you know. even in my 4 banger ranger I always took it easy in the rain. what would you rather do keep switching it in and out of 4 hi or just preass the gas a lil easier. the choice is yours.

If you fit the full time transfer case then you will always have AWD and can use it in the dry without a problem. I considered buying a used 4x4 and fitting the AWD transfer case. I do not know of anyone doing it but the dealer confirmed I could but the parts and fit it or have them do it. As an option on a new Dakota it is $400. I suspect fitting to an existing Dakota would cost more, but you would have some 4x4 parts that you can sell afterwards.
