Subject: 4.7 exhaust question
IP: Logged

Message:
My 02 Dakota 4X4 4.7, auto has a nice low tone
when pushing it a little, and that's good. I'm
looking into going with a flow master cat back
system when the factory muffler rots out. I was at
my towns muffler shop the other day to pick up a
company truck so I asked his advice.

He suggested removing the stock muffler,
installing a "Y" in back of the cat and coming out
with two tail pipes. In other words, no muffler
at all.

I've seen and heard this set up on full size
Rams, Fords and GM's and they sound ok BUT I've
never been inside the cab to hear it.

My question is, has anyone done this to their
Dakota 4.7? Did it *sound* ok and could you still
hear yourself think inside the cab? I DON'T need
a pissed off wife! :(

One other question, Did your "Check Engine" light
stay OFF?

Would I be better off to go with a flow master
cat back dual tail pipe system?

Questions, questions questions... That's what this
site is all about, isn't it?

I love my flowmaster. Was talking about it to my neighbor last night.
It's not that loud in the cab at all unless the windows are down and it echos off of buildings or something.
But it's pretty loud to people OUTSIDE the truck :-)

The neighbor said he can always hear my truck.
And the few times I've heard the wife drive it I could tell it's a lot louder when you're not in it.

Straight pipes, not sure what will be like on our truck inparticular. But I've done it on other vehicles. Holy sheep sheet it can be LOUD!
The last time I did it, it was TOO loud. You could hear my car drive off almost a mile away the highway from where I lived at the time.
Left it like that for a day or two and added mufflers. It was also kind of loud inside that car. Was 350 Chevy, full headers, no cats, true 2 1/2" duals. Cats can make it more quiet tho.

I replaced my cracked open stock muffler on my '00 QC with a Pacesetter turbo muffler that I had on my garage shelf for over 10 years. It was for a Camaro that I had back in high school and it just happen to be the right dimensions. I figured I would give it a try just for the hell of it. Turns out I really like it! It seems to have made the 4.7L slightly more reponsive and I got a consistant 1 MPG gain. It definitly gave it a deeper tone at idle and more aggressive tone when accelerating. While cruising at highway speeds it is hardly noticable over stock. I kept the original pipes and converters. I think you can still get the same muffler I used for about $40.00. After installing the Pacesetter, I don't see the need for a cat back system anymore.

Open exhaust is going to be VERY LOUD in the cab. If you want to hear your radio or have a conversation or not lose your hearing then I'd put a muffler on it. I have a Gibson cat back on mine and I love the sound.

I have had a magnaflow system that has dual exits behind each rear wheel for about 3 years. I am very happy with it! Sounds great, get lots of compliments, but not too loud or obnoxious.

I had a Flowmaster 40 1:2 put on and it's loud enough so that I've had comments from the neighbors and a little louder in the cab than I would have preferred. Not so loud I'm having it changed before it rusts out, but next time I'll go a step quieter.

I had a Flowmaster 50 (16" long)with 2 1/2" duals exiting the muffler. I thought it was a bit too loud overall, so I switched to a 70 Series Big Block (22"). The sound out the back is nearly the same, but now there is way less floorboard/ interior noise. '01 4.7 RC 5-spd 3:92; HO cams, true 68mm TB, homebrew alloy air intake, Bosch 4418.

Mine is a single in/out 3 inch (reduced to 2 1/2) with stock pipes. loud outside. Pretty quiet inside if the windows are up to where it's hardly noticable at highway speeds.

I wouldn't want to make mine quieter.

Oh. Mine's a "Delta Flow 40 series" That model reduces INTERIOR RESONANCE. The "old school" Flowmasters are louder in the cab.

I have the Magnaflow dual exhaust system on my truck and it is not so loud that I get annoyed but at the same time, I hear it when someone other then myself is driving my truck, (Which is not very often, might I say). The Magnaflow is not too expensive for my 4.7 QC 4X4 and it sounds extremely nice when I throw some romp into the engine. I would say, defenitely go with a Magnaflow. I have heard the Flowmaster on the exact same setup as mine as well as a Catback and I think the Magnaflow exhaust sounds best for the money.

Just another opinion, flowmaster are a dime a dozen, everyone has one, I can hear them coming and know, "it's another flowmaster" look into m.b.r.p. maybe expensive, but stainless, might be important about mother nature and road conditions, sound is awesome, at idle bearly know it's there, at 2k nice tone, at 5-6k, mean as hell

Look at it this way on deciding for your exhaust. Flowmasters are popular for a reason! They sound awesome, especially in the 4.7. I've heard others like dynomax and magnaflow as well, all very good systems. You just can't go wrong with those 3.

go with flowmaster 40 series.. the best you can get no need on all this stainless steel muffler unless your building a show truck other than that stainless aint really gonna last that much longer. do what i did i got 40 series flowmaster single in dual out.. unless you got a 4x4 i would go single in single out. i also painted my exhoust with high temp black paint had it on for a year now and still looks really good. just a couple of scuffs on the muffler but no rust.. but remember to sand your pipes before painting!

While I am partial to the Flowmaster 40 series, I do agree with ID4x4 that M.B.R.P exhaust sounds AWESOME! I heard a sound clip of a dak with it and WOW! If you got the money, I'd look into it.

Have you heard a Gibson Split dual setup? I have on on my Dak, and it sounds wonderful, in cab anbd out. Frankly I think Flowmasters sound a bit raspy. Plus, it's entirely stainless steel. Check out Gibson's website.
