I got an 03 recently and can't figure out what the sam he11 the dash pockets below the heater controls are for. Certainly can't put anything in them, when I hit the gas the stuff in the pockets hits the floor. Is there supposed to be something inside these pockets like little trays for storing small objects or are the pockets completely useless?

I noticed there wasn't an ash tray &#*!@%. Now there's no good place to store loose change, fuses and other small stuff.

Also can't figure out what the recessed areas on top of the dash are for? Can't put anything up there without it sliding off the dash while cornering.

The 03 Dak's have some nice improvements, but I don't get what Dodge was thinking about on these items.

Heh, your guess is as good as mine... And my ashtray is missing also, but my fold down center counsel has a change holder in it...

Yeah, I don't think that I've ever even tried to keep anything on the dash. I guess it was one of those things that looked good on paper. IIRC, I saw those dashboard recesses prominently advertised on the Dodge website back when I was shopping for my Dak.

As for the change holder in the armrest, I'll add that to the list of "brainfarts".
So you're pulling up to the toll booth and you have to lift the lid up with your right hand, hold it there and reach across with your left hand to get the change out. Brilliant.
I know, I try not to gripe about these things, but...

The little pockets in the dash are for optional controls that you don't have. The one to the right side of temp control is for the passenger side airbag key lock which isn't there on a QC obviously, so it's an empty pocket. The one to the left of the temp control is where they mount the 4x4 selector switch, which on a 2wd obviously isn't there. Instead of putting trim panels over the small openings they left it empty.

Since I have a QC the one on the right is empty in mine. I made a trim piece to go over it and mounted my amplifier remote gain control knob there. Worked well for me. And since I have a 4x4 my left one is occupied with that selecter switch..

As far as an ashtray for your dakota. It is an expensive option for a little plastic cup with a lid that sits in your cup holder.

4x4 & air bag switch makes sense, but it's strange Dodge went cheap and didn't make filler panels for the holes when they weren't used. Now that I know something's not missing from the truck I can make use of the pockets.

bnc, are you saying that Dodge has an optional ash tray, or that ash tray's are an expensive option. I just found it wierd that the 03 didn't have an ash tray in the dash like every other vehicle I have owned. Even non-smokers use the ash tray for loose change.

Since the filler panels are also molded pieces, i doubt there's any cost savings over flush-mount filler panels. It's not like they just leave a gaping hole in the dash. The perception seems to be that the little pockets are potentially more useful, and not significantly less attractive, than flush fill panels. The indents on top of the dash can be helpful (better than a sloped, seamless dash, anyway), but they'd need some kind of sticky rubber lining like the center console has to really be useful in a moving car.

To the best of my knowledge, Chrysler stopped making ashtrays standard back in the early days of the LH platform. On most models there is a "smokers group" package, which consists of a lighter and a small cup-shaped ashtray that fits into one of the cupholders. i seem to recall that it was in the $20 range.

Now, what confuses me is the floor-mount mini-console in my '04 SLT with the 40/20/40 split bench and auto. It's got a split bench, so you can seat a (really skinny) third person in the front seat, but if their feet are more than six inches long they have to put them in your cupholder. Which, considering how much difficulty i have putting a drink back into the cupholders while driving at night, may be the best use for them.

ok i understand the right hole for the airbag disconnect, But i have 04 Q/C 4wd and the the left hole is open. the 4wd knob is to to the left of the hole.
Why does D/C call the indentations in the rug under the rear seat on the Q/C storage?

I had the same problem with the upper dash trays. The way I solved that was to get a piece of the sponge that is used to line tool box drawers (sears sells it) Cut it to fit, set it on and it stays put. I've had it in mine for a year now, with no problem.
