I know this was brought up at least once but
no one knew the fix.

Problem: Every once in a while when I turn my
LEFT turn signal on, all my turn lights will
flash as if I turned my hazard flasher on
including the two arrows in the dash.

I've taken the 02 Dakota 4X4 4.7 with tilt wheel
to the dealer and it didn't act up for them.

Sunday (01/30/05) it was acting up ALL day when
I wanted to make left hand turns.

I'm guessing one of three things is going bad.

1) Turn signal switch
2) Wiring harness down the steering post
3) Electronic signal controller under dash

The truck is still in warranty and the dealer
won't do anything about this problem untill they
*see* it for themselves.

I doubt very much I am the only one with this
problem and I'll bet the dealerships know of the
problem but won't do anything about it untill
they see it happening.

This morning (Monday 01/31/05) I get into the
truck to head for work and the left turn signal
works just fine!

I have had my ball joint recall notice and am
planning to head for the dealership after work
today to get the ball rolling to get them
replaced. I'm hoping the turn signal will act up
when I get there. If it is, I plan to leave it
flash and have them at least look at it and see
for themselves it really is a problem.

Anyone out there having the same problem?

I had a problem that was similar about a month ago. I found the root of the problem to be the wire harness in the steering column. It seems when I put in my aftermarket radio I pulled on the dash panel in a way that caused the clip on the top of the main harness to break. After using the tilt adjust a couple of times it pulled the harness out about half way. So about half the pins were connected. I lost my hazards, most windshield wiper controls, signals, and control over my brights. Occasionally the signals would work and do weird things as you described. I went in and pulled the dash panel again and pulled the covers off the steering column and found the problem. I then used a soldering iron to plastic weld the harness in place somewhat permenantly. Haven't had any problems since.

Hope this helps.

Have you checked the level of your blinker fluid? Sounds like it's running low...

Seriously though...it definitely sounds like an issue in the wiring. Bad ground perhaps?

2001 QC 4X4 4.7l sport. Same thing was happening to me. Found the back right tail light was burnt out but one of the filaments (two of them in the bulb) had burnt out and then rejoined itself somewhat and would work sometimes. I thought that this may have caused the hazards to come when I turned left. My neigbhour (a mechanic) suggested that the hazard button on the steering column may be sticking occassionally and is trigger by turning left. I shop-vac around the hazard button and blew air around it. Have not had a problem since. Whether it was the burnt out bulb or dust around the button, who knows. Hope that helps.

Josh,

Apparently, you have to use the Level VII blinker fluid, which is only available through the dealer. They want $35 for a quart here in NJ! I've decided to just use hand signals instead : )

Sorry RadioMan... I couldn't resist (Hey, Josh started it!)
Good luck with it. If you figure it out, let us all know!

Simple problem, simple solution... only make right hand turns!

Have you tried replacing the flasher? One time Mine would do something similar. When i went to make a turn, left or right, both would come on and stay on. I would have to turn the turning signal off for the lights to go off. Replaced the flasher and no problems since.

I have the exact same problem Radio Man. It seems that to it only happens when i use the blinker a lot. Anyway, I took it to the dealer last week for the recall and asked them to look at it. They said it may be due to my after market trailer light harness. Anyway, when it happens, I just turn off my truck for a few hours and then it works ok again. My .02.
