I have a question for those that may have tried
this. Anyone tried wiring or holding their high
low dimmer switch half way to keep the high/low
beams both on?

I've noticed some company selling a system to have
both beams on at the same time. You may have
noticed it on "Horse Power TV" or "Trucks" on the
Spike channel.

My questions are, does this shorten the life of
the bulbs because of the added heat AND is it
legal?

It's a VERY easy mod to do and you don't need a
*special* kit to do it. Your local Radio Shack
store has everything you need. I think the only
thing I'd add would be a "enable" switch.

I would say it shortens your bulb life. also I think its illegal as its way brighter. I think its for if yuor off road or on a dark country road and need extra light on the road.

I've done this mod on several vehilces in the past (but haven't got around to doing it on my Dak, yet) It's simple, I also use an enbale switch. Would be great for off-road and those times on the hiway at night with no moon etc. Didn't notice a shorter bulb life as I wasn't driving around with both beams on all the time.
Go for it and let us know how you like it.

I've seen warnings about the Dakota headlights. The heat over an extended period of time will damage the headlamp housing.

The high/low beam all use the same bulb. So technically you can't have them both on at the same time. I only know that the Chevys have different bulbs for both high and low beams.

Being legal is a stupid question because if it was...everyone would be driving with there high beams on and there wouldn't be highs/lows.

DakNut...you obviously have never tried holding the switch part way in as you CAN have both beams on at the same time. Next time you go out after dark, do it and see what I mean...it's much brighter than having just your high beams on.

As far as legality...it's probably not legal to even have them work that way, but you prolly wouldn't get caught since you shouldn't have your high beams on when anyone's around anyway.

Another easy lighting mod to do is, remember the
older cars that had four head lights? All four
came on with brite lights and two dim. It's very
easy to install Hi/Low beams in the Hi beam side
only and replace the two wire socket with the
hi/low three wire one. A little wiring and you're
all set.

Now you have four low beams and four hi beams
but NOT four hi and low at the same time unless
you install a simple relay setup with a enable
switch.

I have a 79 AMC Concord with the four head lamps.
I just might do it this summer on it.
