Subject: Led Lights...Interested????
IP: Logged

Message:
Im looking at a specific company which prodeces LED lights for many different applications. They include automotive applications but I've yet to see them for the 3157 bulb..that would replace the tail, and front signal lights of the newer Dak's. Im wanting to see how many would be interested in purchasing these LED lights if available. I know they list price fot the 1157's are at a price of roughly $48 a bulb. Its not just 3leds to a cluster either. Theres a series of leds that point out from the back, plus a ring of LEDS that go around the side of the fixture as well. Im hoping if there's enough interest shown here, I can relay this to the sales dept. & maybe obtain a Group Buy if there is enough interest shown. They have a life expectancy of 100,000 plus hours or 10yrs and not to mention look cool
They come in Super Red, plus many other colors so i assume we could get maybe Super Orange for the font signals as well. This setup would look sweet with clear corners.
Let me know!!
Hopefully I can contact them today and find out what they offer and if they have plans to offer that bulb. Cross your fingers

Thanks

Interesting - I have seen the 1157/58 LED sets
at G.I.Joes for $5-6. The problem with those
APC http://www.4apc.net/ lamps is all the
LEDs point in the same direction and what
you see out the back is a little round light
source (about 2" dia.); the rest of the taillight is
dark.
Since LEDs are pretty much tightly focused, I
reckon they would have to be designed in a
spherical array, to imitate the way light is
emitted from an old-tech light bulb in order to
take advantage of the great light dispersal
produced by modern cars'.
What you describe sounds intriguing - they
definitely appear to be headed in the right
direction.
Although I doubt they will ever get down to
$5-6 each, $50 is fairly steep, considering
some cars would require 6 or more lamps
just for the back end (not us).
Since the later model Daks have electronic
flashers, I guess they won't need a balancing
resistor to keep the flashing rate normal.
Jeez, that cursor's annoying tho...

Well, I called the company I was interested in and unfortunately they do not offer the 3157 in a LED configuration. Apparently it has to do with the Wedge base that the lamp uses. The 3157 uses a rather large wedge base and they do not have any in that size to make a LED lamp. Maybe in the future where they see more "need" for them to produce one, but for now he said they do not have plans to.

Daddy-D
Your correct on what you said on how most are focused just to the middle. The ones I was lookin at also had a ring of LEDS that shot out from the sides and would look like it would light up the majority of the reflector

I'll check out the other sites you guys mentioned

Thanks all

LED light conversion is a pet interest of mine;
I'm working on building a custom setup on my
racecar (SAAB 99), employing "sheets" of
LEDs implanted in the taillight bases (lenses
come of in the older cars, making it way easier
to do this).
I will definitely stay tuned here...

I bought a set of the APC's... They are in a toolbox in the garage somewhere. like Daddy-D said "LEDs point in the same direction and what
you see out the back is a little round light
source (about 2" dia.); the rest of the taillight is dark." is exactly true. I even tried them in my mustang before I put them in the failed idea's bin.

I contacted Daniel Stern Lighting
http://lighting.mbz.org/
to get his opinion - and he IS opinionated - his
main objection is they're not tested for light
quality (frankly, Hz Eng's website's photos
suck big time). Dan is pretty cynical, but he
has some good points, focused on safety -
which is what it's all about.
If Hz Eng offered a money-back guarantee, I
would gladly buy a set to do a side-by-side
comparo.
I also asked him if he knows anyone selling
E-code headlights; he thinks they're N/A in the
US.
I also am about to try replacing those
annoyingly-bright indicator lights (airbag,
cruise, low fuel, etc.) with
appropriately-colored LEDs. Heck, maybe I'll
just paint the bulbs with acrylic paint instead...

YEa, I looked at the HzEng website and was not impressed at all!! Look at Ledtronics.com, there's a link that says Automotive bulbs and there it show's what the 1156 & 1157 look like. This would be the same except they don't have the wedge base we need for the 3157's. Go figure!
What are the E-code headlights your taliking about?

I just happen to run across you guys message board about LED's. I happen to have a '98 Dodge Ram. I don't like the LED socket inserts. What I'm in the hunt for is an LED Mfg that will retrofit my entire Rear Tail Light and Front Turn Signal Light Assembly with LED's. Not many want the challenge! I'm sure some of you guys have seen the New LED Tail Light on a Cadillac Passenger Car and also some LED Front Turn Signals on some Sporty looking Luxury Cars. That's what I'm in the hunt for! To get that same look! Without doing any housing modifications what so ever. Just take out the Old Existing Tail Light Housing with the Bulbs and replace it with a Clear Face Housing with LED's! Unless someone with good LED Knowledge can assist me in customizing my own Tail Light? All Ideas and Info is welcome! Just send an email my way!

I would definitly be in for the full array led tailights. The big trucks I drive at work are full of them and they rock! When people tailgate me I flip on 6 led tailights and they are so bright in the daytime that it causes them to brake hard and back off. Good times... Check out lightlens.com for a huge selection of led bulbs.

I just did a search on google for "3157 LED" and came up with tons of results. It looks like these are readily available and in colors like amber, blue, red, and white. Prices range from 9.99/bulb on up.
