consult your owners manual. I would guess you have a 4WD selector on the floor. place in neutral and move to desired setting.

my 2001 dakota v6 auto has the switch on the dash to the right of the steering wheel. remember to use 4hi for snow, 4low is for towing heavy loads and climbing steep loose dirt

I'm hoping he means like towing someone's vehicle out of a ditch rather than towing a large boat from Indiana to Florida since it changes the gearing or whatever.

since you have a 99, you likely have the floor shifter like my 00 does (the little dash selector came on the 01+ dakotas) you can shift into 4-HI, at speeds up to 55mph (according to my owner's manual) .

Shifting into 4-LO, is more complicated... you have to have the transmission in neutral (depress the clutch with a manual) while rolling slowly (around 2-3mph) then make one quick, firm motion from 2wd/4-HI into the 4-LO position... Do NOT pause the transfer case in neutral.... doing so, may require you to turn off the truck, and come to rest to avoid gear clash... Nother thing to note, is you must be careful not to overspeed the engine in 4-LO!! it's much easier to do then it sounds.... my truck tops out (in 4th gear) in 4-LO, at around 40mph or so... this is pushing 5k RPMS! but the power in 4lo is AWESOME! I bieleve it cuts the final drive ratio in half..

Pmease corrent me if I'm wrong on any of this... I just pulled a 12 hour shift, and got home at 4:00 :-) So I'm kind of in zombie mode...

daffydak, you're right about the gear clash! I tried 4LO the day I got my Dak, on a freshly graded dirt road of course! I did the 2HI to 4LO shift a few times so I could do it without gear clash. Ironically, I have yet to use 4LO since testing it out 5 years ago.
