If you have the tow package the receiver has a tow hook on each side of it. If not the hole for the tow ball on the rear bumper is probably a good option. But the rear bumper is rated for 1/3rd the capacity of a frame bolted receiver.

Hopefully the car you are towing will have a tow hook on the front. The owners manual should say where to attach when towing. I would hand the tow strap / rope to the owner of the car and ask him to hook it up on his end.

I've pulled many cars out of ditches just using their transportation tie downs - haven't ripped one off yet. Can't help much with truck side, I have some good attachment points you don't. Look for something solidly mounted to the frame (but not steering parts) that isn't so close to your bodywork that the sheetmetal will be dented when chain or rope gets tight. Often you end up hooking to the rear of a stuck vehicle that has slid off the road nose first on the right side. It often helps to have them steer hard left (this may seem counter-intuitive), then snap back the other way as the car is almost out of the ditch. Otherwise, the car tends to just drag following along the ditch as you're trying to pull it back onto the road.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

It depends on how stuck they are and how bad the roads are. I tried pulling someone out of a ditch once with my 95 CC 4x4 and it just wasn't heavy enough. Then again, it was a taurus wagon too in 18" ditch. I Snapped the 5,000lb tow strap though.

Extracting other vehicles is an art just like a lot of other things....
Just use common sense most of the above are good answers.

Other than a slow winch job a strech and snap tow strap works best, slowly tighten the strap between the vehicles, then pull hard. It will strech a little then snap the other car out, light vehicles can even use this method, it's the inertia of the moving vehicle and the snap of the nylon strap that does the work.
Make sure you have a quality strap not a cheapo autoparts store one with metal hooks on it.

I ripped a minivan with the right front tire bent at a 90* angle off a fire hydrant with my 450lb four-wheeler using that stretch and snap trick. Of course I wasn't using a nylon strap...I had a big old braided rope which would stretch like a f'n rubberband. Pretty freaky...I'd get up onto the footpegs and get it up to about 15 mph in 4wd and then it'd catch, stretch, and rip the van about 6 feet into the road and then the rope would contract back to normal and drag me backwards with all 4 wheels hopping in the street. The van had a busted transaxle and wasn't assisting me whatsoever.

If you have a 2" reciever hitch, buy a 2" recovery strap with loops on each end. Slide the loop into the reciever, put the pin through it and you are good to go.
