Subject: Hella Air Horns Install

Message:
In order to piss off all those people that drive and talk on their cell phones (not paying any attention to the road) I decided to get some Hella Air Horns for my Dakota. The instructions do require you to install a relay with the compressor. Can I get away with not installing it? Trying to see if I can make the wiring a little easier. The stock horns have a 2 wire connection, so does the Hella Compressor. Would a simple + and - hookup work here or will I have to wire in the relay? If I have to use the relay, so be it but I don't know if the stock horns wiring setup can handle the compressor without the relay.

Since there seems to be quite a few people here that know a thing or two about the Dakota's I thought you could give me some advice! Thanks

Check out my earlier post:

I have a 2004 4.7L and the two stock horns are located next to and on the driver's side of the radiator right in front. Each has separate wires with a snap-on connector - very easy to disconnect. I'm just going to connect the - to the - and the + to the +. Should be ok - crap how often do I use my horn?! Not too often. I'm putting my two new air horns on this weekend.

let me know how it turns out, if all goes well (and sounds like it should) i'll just cut and connect without adding the extra relay. That should save alot of wiring time!

depends how much current that compressor draws. if it's more than the circuit can handle you will probably wind up blowing fuses everytime you blow the horn.

I'd love to have an extremely loud airhorn replace my stock horn. The stock one is just too wimpy sounding. Sure would scare the hell out of some idiot on the cell phone with the windows down haha.

the compressor runs off of 12 volts. I really don't know the purpose of the relay so I haven't a clue what difference it makes if its there or not.

The relay is a low current device (relay coil) used to energize a high current device (compressor).
Use it. You won't regret it.
If you don't, you'll wish you had.

Looks like i'll be using the relay....i've got two sitting around. For the wiring diagram youv'e got 2 options on how to install it. One is with a + charge coming from the horn and the other is a - charge. Does anyone know which is the right one to use? If I do mix the two up will it hurt anything or is it a simple fix by reversing it?

I installed the air horns this weekend. Took about an hour. I hooked the new air compressor to a space under the hood and tied the plastic trumpets to the air conditioning piping using those white plastic ties that the cops use now to handcuff people. I kept the existing horns and wired 16 ga from the wiring for the existing horns to the new compressor. I happened to be correct in connecting the - to the -. The instructions said if it were backward, just flip the wires. Then I hooked up the air tubing and put a ground from the - to a bolt somewhere and the new horns worked like a charm.

Now I have four horns - 2 stock and 2 air horns. They are very loud. No blown fuses and no need for a relay.
