Subject: Bad gas mileage and smelly exhaust
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 4.7. Drop in k&n is the only mod. Recently the exhaust began smelling really strong and my gas mileage dropped off on the last tank from 15-16 mpg to 7-8 mpg, and appears to be equally as bad on the current fillup. Any suggestions on things to check would be appreciated.

Could be a bad catcon. If you're under 80K miles, it's still under federal warranty and you get it for free at any dealer.

Does it feel as though it's lost power?
What kind of smell? unburned fuel or rotten eggs?
No check engine lights?

The check engine light was already on due to a power steering pressure switch being bad. This happened after that. We just replaced that switch tonight, and the light is still on throwing a new code, P0171 which points to the O2 sensor.

The smell is not rotten egg, but more like unburned fuel.

I am at 92,000 miles. What is the catcon?

Thanks for all the input!

CatCon = catalytic + converter. Just to round out this thread but not necessarily help you, sounds like ignition or timing related. Dead or misgapped plugs, bad ignition wires, burnt rotor or cap contacts could cause unburnt fuel to pass exhaust valves. Retarded timing will also waste gas and drop the mpg. But at this point I suspect O2 sensor. Dead sensor tells computer "mixture too lean" so computer adds gas and/or retards timing making rich condition. Gas smell and low mpg.
