Subject: Dakota, Jeep depreciation ?

I don't understand why Dodges depreciate quickly while Jeeps hold their value. They have nearly equal repair and reliability histories. They are made with many of the same components, since D-C makes them both. What am I missing?

Who is telling you that the Dodges lose their value quickly ......
The Ford and GM dealers ?

Also, the JEEP brand name is extremely over rated and the NADA
retail value is not what most people are willing to pay.

Just try to sell a JEEP at NADA retail or better yet, check with a
bank and see what the loan value is on a one year old JEEP
vehicle v/s a one year old Dakota.

As a matter of fact, it was a Jeep dealer. I told the Jeep salesman that the prices on their vehicles were too high. He insisted that Jeeps do not depreciate as quickly as many other automobiles, including the Dakota I was also looking at (and eventually bought). Somehow I knew that salesman and the guide books were full of it. The facts just didn't add up. I'm glad to hear that other people agree.

Dodge trucks and vans do lose depreciate quickly. The dealer I bought mine from 3 years ago wanted to give me roughly 1/3 what I paid for it on trade. I thought he was pulling my peepee but he showed me the inventory and price list and said most Dodge dealers in the area were floating on used trucks, especially Caravans.

I think if Dodge built them a little better they would hold their value and Dodge would hold customers. And as a matter of fact Jeeps do depreciate just as fast. Any product built by DC has a lead weight tied to the resale price, including Benzes.

Well it should be always known to never take to heart what a car sales person says lol. I believe the depreciating value of dodges is also based off of demand for product, for example; how many dodge trucks do you see comparing to chevys and fords? I am fairly accurate to state that I see 3 times as many fords and chevys on the road as I do dodges. Everyone and their mother owns a damn s10 or something rather. The demand is much more in favor of chevys and fords so therefore, dodge is not going to sell unless it's priced to sell.

I have had three Jeeps and three Dakotas. I have always done much better (thousands)trading a high mileage Dakota (85,000 +)compared to our lower mileage Jeeps. The lots are full of used Jeeps. The dealers seem to wholesale the Jeeps but showcase the Dakota trades. I will tell you one thing, you get a lot more vehicle for the money with the Dakota than with the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. Going off-road on the sand, in Winter snow and ice storms or towing my 4,000 boat, the Dakota with the 4.7 will always be my choice. As you might guess, my wife likes Jeeps. Our Jeeps have spent a lot more time in the shop with major problems than the Dodges. I think you do better at trade time going to the Dodge Dealer with the Dodge and the Jeep Dealer with the Jeep. I have also found that Dodge Service Departments have been much better than the Jeep shops. Because of this, I have been servicing the Jeeps at the Dodge Boys. They seem to like the business too.
