hey dakers My truck seems to be a magnet lately for minor scratches...first of all my nephew plowed into the side of the bed with his bike...long scratch but does not go down to primer...my finger nail can barely grab an edge...second my black lab was raised in the back of all of my trucks only this is the first time its been a black truck so I have nail scrathes along the sides of the truck./.......what is the best way to remove these scratches without causing further damage I know they will buff out but I,ve seen some guys ruin a good paint job when they didnt know what they were doing......wich rubbing compound is safe...again these are surface scratches that do no warrant repainting...can I color sand and if so what grit?

Don't Sand It!

If the scratches are that deep then you will need paint. You have to remember that there is a base coat and a clear coat and if you sand you will strip this clear coat off. If the scratches are not too deep try this:
Using a quality random orbital polisher (I reccommend Porter Cable) apply Meguiars #1 Medium cleaner to the area using a medium low speed. You can do this several times until the scratch is barely visible. Then apply Meguiars #9 Polish/Swirl Remover at a high speed to remove the swirls and fine scratches. Then apply a final coat of your favorite wax. If the scratches have not penetrated the base coat this should remove them. If they are real deep and you don't have money for paint now you can use one of those waxes dyed black. It won't look perfect but it will hide it and make it less visible. If you are not comfortable doing this or don't want to invest in the equiptment/materials then take it to a professional detailer.

Good luck,

Craig

I use Turtle Wax Color Magic (black) for now, also my orbital polisher burned out - so until I can afford a new paint job the colored wax masks the scratches pretty well. It's a dirty job & hard to make it look good though.

For the deeper scratches, the above suggestions are good.

However, on the light scratches and swirl marks, the Meguiar's Scratch X product workk GREAT.

I just bought a 99 CC in black. It looked good, and was in great shape, but I new I could do better.

I got the Scratch X and did 1/2 of the hood. It was AMAZING the difference between the two halves. It is hard to tell what is on your paint until you see clean paint next to it.

I then followed up with a polish and a wax, and the truck looks like it just came out of the factory.

I also recomned the Meguiars Scratch-X!! I to have a Black Dakota and use the Scratch-x around the door handles and where ever they appear, even takes the majority of swirl marks to. I had a dog jump on the side of my truck that wasnt on a leash (boy was I PISSED) i used that stuff and took it right out. I followed up with the Meguiars Medallion Paint cleaner, polish, and the Medallion Paint protection and it couldn't look better.

I have a black one also, it seems like everything that touches my paint scraches it. I will have to try that stuff, I have tried one brand can't remember the name but it didn't work at all.

To permenantly get rid of the dog scratches, get an over-the-rail bedliner, preferably a spray-in liner. Then you can concentrate on the rest of the truck and not worry about the bed. There are all kinds of spray-in bedliners on the market. I have an Arma spray-in liner which works very well...I've tossed all kinds of stuff in the bed and never scratched or gouged it, although stuff slides around more than I'd like.
