Hi,
Can somebody please explain the Gen I, Gen II, and Gen III thing. I see people describe their trucks as Gen III, but then K&N has a Gen II intake system, what gives?

the gen I dak is the ones with the pre magnum engines.

the gen II dak is the ones with the magnum engines, but before the body change (up to 96)

the gen III dak is 97-01

the k&n is something totally different.

k&n gen I is a 14" open element air filter that sits on top of your throttle body to give you more power.

the k&n gen II is actually a cold air intake that moves the filter where your stock air box is and draws in "cold" air to give you even more performance. the k&N gen II was designed to fit the gen III dak.

The Gen I Dakota's were first made in 1987 or 1988 (I cant remember) and ended in 1990.

The Gen II started in 1991 and went until 1993 (I think).

The Gen III went from 1994-Present.

The Generations are due to body style and engines that were placed in them. Thus, you have different "generations" of trucks, but all of the same family.

The Generations IV Dakota's are due out sometime soon, but I dont know exactly what year. New engine, body style, etc.
