Message:
Anyone else have a Dakota Quad Cab ('03) and wonder where to put a sub?

I have looked all over the net for someone selling a custom made box that would not take up too much cab space, or be in the way, but haven't found anything.

Any ideas/suggestions or websites to check would be gratly appreciated.

I asked the same question in the Custom Audio forum. Tony Cricco was kind enough to email pictures of the box he had built to replace the seat portion under the armrest in the bench seat in his Dakota. He built a very nice wooden box firing down and I imagine it is completely hidden once installed.

My Dakota has bucket seats so it has a large center console. I plan to remove the center console and mount a speaker box in the bottom of it.

Dude. Click on my picture/signature below.
I've modded my 03 QC and have a bad a$$ RF 10' P2 Sub behind my right rear seat! Hidden well too.

The right seat is moved forward 1.5 inches. It was worth it. My kids hardly notice when sitting back there.

it's amazing how much room there really is to be had with some mods.

As of recent I now have two amps UNDER them rear seats as well as a power inverter, a 10" RockFord Fozgate P2 Sub behind the right rear seat, and my PC based multi-media system mounted behind the left rear seat. Both seats modded to fold down if you lift up the bottoms first to unhook the seat backs. Still perfectly safe to sit in.
I've done a lot of work to them, and have plenty of photos on my website.

The only ready-made box that I know of is the Thunderform. T-form makes a single 10" box that fits behind the drivers side rear seat (lose the fold ability). Other then that, Q-logic makes an 8" truck box that fits behind the drivers side rear. I used this and a Solo S8L7.

After that, you are into custom boxes that may or may not take up seating room.

Check through the audio board. Lots of older discussions and ideas.

I am building a downfire box for an Infinity Perfect 12.1 sub in my 03 QC. The box has the foot print of the tranny hump and and goes from the back seats up into the center console. Rough dimensions are 10" high, 24" long bottom and 20" long top, 13" wide at the back and 10" wide at the front.

The sides are fiberglassed to conform to the irregular shape of the top and bottom. I put down a couple layers of .75 oz mat and cloth (the crap available at Home Depot and Wally World), then attacked it with 5 layers of 3 oz mat. The sides are rock solid with this much fiberglass, but I am thinking of glassing in a dowel between the sides to give it a little extra rigidity.

I guess it all depends on what space you are willing to give up. I wanted a 12" sub and this was the best choice for me since I wanted the back seats to flip up and never have a 5th passanger in the back. Graphite's seat mod and box is another good option, I also have seen others make custom boxes that go behind the rear seats or replacing the center console with a sub box. Any QC sub box option you choose, your going to loose something.

I think i might have found a fiberglass box that replaces the center consolebetween the front seats, which isn't like losing much really.

only bummer is you can only get like two 8's in there i think.

your's sounds like tis gonna THUMP in there. QCs have great room inside for phonics too.

best a luck, can you post some pics when you get er done? maybe some making it shots even.

Cheers,

Fern

I thought about taking some pic's during construction,,, but was always knee deep in wood glue or resin when the thought came about. Plus, I would have to sneek the the camera past my wife and she wouldn't be too keen about the dig cam being out in the garage. Wished I had taken some pic's as there are a couple of things that I did on this box that made the fiberglass layup really easy.

The box portion is completed, but I still have to chop down the excess glass on the corners, lay in interior gussets, coat the inside of the box with sound dampening material and of course, figure out how I want to finish the exterior.

I'll see if I can post some pics later this weekend,,,

My box, which is behind the WIDER pasenger side rear seat, was some cheap box I bought at some 'liquidation' sale for a really cheap price. It is 1 cubic foot. Actually too much for the 10" RF P2 series. So I have two 2x4's screwed to one side of the inside to make it effectively .75 cu feet.

I'm tempted to try and get a 12" RF P2 to fit. If I manage that I'll post that as well.

I just got home from comparing speaker boxes to someone else. He had a xtended cab Silverado and lost one side of his rear seat for one 12". I've got my single 10" hidden behind my seat and it's actually louder than his 12" because my RF has a longer excursion than his 12" pioneer.

If you want LOUD for a small size, go Rockford Fozgate or other similar high end sub that has more speaker excursion (in and out movement).
You can get a long excursion speaker to come close to being as loud as two standard speakers.

Here's some pic's of my QC sub box for an Infinity Perfect 12.1. The sides are glassed and the rest of the box is 3/4 MDF. The box sits on the tranny hump and has a relief for the back seats to sit on. The one thing that's a drawback is that center console will need to be notched out since the box goes 6"+/- into the box, but still leaves 3" for storage inside the console.

Here's an angle view from the back, you can see the odd shape to the top allowing maximum air space in the box while also allowing the front seats to recline back.

The bottom shot shows the 1" undercut of the box which allows the sub plenty of room to move, the sub is also sunk into the box 3/4" to make sure the sub has plenty of room.

The sides are glassed with 5 layers of 3oz mat, I am guessing 1/4-3/8" thick, you can also see the gussets laid in the interior to make sure the sides don't come loose.

Next steps, sound dampening the interior of the box and exterior finish,,, carpet, vinyl, paint???
