Subject: Just bought a left over '04 Dakota

Monday I worked out a deal on a left over '04 Dakota. It's a CC 4X4 with the 4.7L engine. The color is molten red metallic clear coat which was a $210 option! The sticker was $27,980, but I got it for $5K below dealer invoice or $20929. This is my 3rd Dakota after having a '98 CC 4X4 and a '00 RT RC.

I can't help comparing this Dakota to my '98. The '98 had the 5.2L, infinty sound system, positraction, skid plate, overhead console, and 4 wheel ABS which my '04 doesn't have even though my '98 stickered within $1k of the '04. I've noticed that Dodge has decontented the later Dakotas by removing the under hood lamp, the alloy rim spare, and the upholstry just looks cheaper. However, the '04 has rear discs, the 5 speed auto, rack and pinion steering, the SOHC 4.7L and the electonic NV231-HD transfer case, so some worthwhile improvements were also made.

Overall, the '04 feels much more refined than the '98. The 4.7L revs and runs smoother than the 5.2L and the torque of the 4.7L is fairly close to the 5.2L. The rack and pinion give a much tighter steering feel than the old "ball and nut" steering gear. So, I'm pleased with the advances made during the life span of the 3rd generation Dakotas, and see no reason to buy an '05 since I don't care for the new styling. Just my $.02...

I got a similar deal in the middle of December. Found a Black 04 QC 4.7 with AWD, bed liner, bed cover, leather, infinity audio, pin striping, side steps, upgraded door inserts, and a few other things. The MSRP was $35.4K, the dealer let it go for $25.8K.

Shopping for end of line vehicles is great!

PS, if anyone else is looking in December med there were 3 other AWD QCs sitting on dealer lots. So there must be some deals still to be had!

This is my first truck, not a kid just have a thing for sports cars!

I bought a leftover 03 RC SXT 2x4 3.9L 5spd

Sticker just under $2oK, I paid about $12K. I probably would have bought used otherwise but I couldn't pass up a brand new truck for that price.

Its my first truck, or vehicle for that matter. Its bare bones, no power windows, locks, or any of that other fancy stuff. Just less to break I guess.

I've had my truck just over year now and IMHO:

The engine is a little underpowered. Wish I could have gotten the 3.7L or the 4.7L.

When I bought it I was a little leary about not having 4WD for snow, but after a few snow storms here in PA, the truck performed flawlessly. All it needs is a little weight in the back (i.e. ARE Z series cap).

The grey bumpers on the SXT's make them look cheap, especially with white paint. Other than that I am really satisfied with my truck. On the highway it feels like a sports car. Definately a quality machine and a sharp looking truck.

i bought my 04 in about the same manner. it was a 04 with the 3.7 l, auto, 4x4 cc, 3.92 rear end, alloy rims, tilt cruise, fender flairs, cd player yadda yadda. it stickered for 25,600. they let it go for 18,500 and even threw in free tinting, gave me more for my trade in than anyone else was offering. They of course did that "you are eligable for 0%" so i came in and in the finance room they all of the sudden said i could only get 6%. i said ok, give me the keys to my old truck, see ya later. after much talking, even with the owner of the dealership they agreed to take off whatever i was paying in intrest from the price of the truck so my payments would be the same as they offered me over the phone with the 0%. i think it was about 1200 more. Overall my experience was great, even after the sale they have been good to me, giving me free oil changes and what not. as f ar as im concered buying a closeout model like this is the only way to buy a new vehicle, it also helped i dont find the 05's as nearly good looking as i do the 04's

The looks of the 05 also made me want an 04.

Bought mine from Southtown Dodge in St. Louis
which was a 450 mile drive home. I highly
recommend them to anyone else in the market.
They were great to work with and gave me coupons
for three years of free oil changes at any dodge
dealer.

Man, i hate being such a lousy negotiator. i really wish car companies would just let you order a car for a fair price off the internet, instead of posting huge MSRPs, then giving back 20% on rebates and making you go through all the dealer BS... ugh. i should have used one of those pay services.

i got my '04 CC in the end of October- stickered for 24,800 (4.7, auto, 2wd, LSD), got it for 19,800 at almost 7% financing (with excellent credit)... took it home filthy with a dead tail light after 6 months sitting on the lot. Still, i consider the price i paid to be fair for a vehicle with that powertrain. The 4.7 is the first modern V-8 i've owned, and it's just sweet.

i too was a bit saddened to see the de-contenting over previous years, and annoyed by the stealership and a water leak onto the drivers-side floorboard, but overall i'm pleased with the truck.

hey dave,
if you hate the negotiating then try a site like carsdirect.com they pretty much set you up with a fairly decent deal with from the get go. after they value your trade demand 500 more on your trade and 500 less on the truck then sign and walk knowing that you could have possibly saved a couple hundred bucks, but the sanity and time you saved makes paying a couple hunred more worth it

i cant believe the dealer gave you a dirty truck, you should write a letter to dodge telling them about your experience. that should get the dealers attention pretty quickly
