Subject: noisy sway bar. Is there any fix?
IP: Logged

Message:
The sway bar on my 02 qc 4x4 is wicked noisey (banging) when i go over bumps. It almost sounds like the ball joint pop but its not them because they are all new as of last week(moogs) and the control arm bushings are new too. I have replaced the bushings on this thing countless times but it has only been a short term solution. I have tried greasing them also to no avail. I know the problem relates to the sway bar because i removed it and the problem want away. Is there any long term solution to this problem? Are there any aftermarket bushings available or better yet an aftermarket away bar? Im really getting sick of it.

I have the exact same problem with mine. Thought it was balljoints at first, but after elimination it was sway bar knocking and squeaking. I've taken my bushings out and used silicone to lube them but that only lasted a couple of days. I didn't want to use grease or anything that would eat them up! I can't find any aftermarket ones myself and hope that someone can help us. I'll keep you posted if I can locate some. Would be a simple fix, just need the parts.

there is a grease that's OK for lubing the sway bar bushings, I just can't remember what it is but I am thinking anti-sieze compound/grease. Pat Goss had told me that was what was OK to use for that application. I have the same squeaking problem with after only 10,000 miles on new bushings, I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I have bought the anti-sieze. I beleive thta is what it was

2-3 times a year I have to remove the bushings, clean them, and re-apply fresh synthetic grease. It's a pain, but easy to do and now only takes me a few mintes.

I'm getting the same noise too. Are you guys getting the same symptons like me?? Does it make a sort of a banging noise like a hammer against steel sound?? I hear it going over bumps. When I'm making tight turns and giving it a little gas it makes that banging sound. It even makes it the sound at a stop sign. As soon as I stop and give it gas a get the noise. Is this the sway bar bushings?? 2000 Dak 4.7 4X4

Thanks,
Anthony

Anthony sounds like yours is too matalic to be bushings, ball joints maybe.

My sway bar bushings made a horrible sqeaking noise(especially in winter). Had them replaced under warranty, solved it for a while but it came back. I did some research on grease and got some Scheaffers(sp)221. It`s an aluminum based grease thats tacky, won`t wash out and won`t mix with water. I`ve since found out that Scheaffers 238 is a thicker version of 221 and might be better. Had mechanic remove, clean and slather with the 221. Been about two months and they are still quiet.

Dude, replace the bushings and links. Cheap easy fix. New sway bar bushings are $22 for the front pair and the entire link joints are $80 a pair.

Jag, on my 02 there are no end links, just a bushing. Its held directly to the lower dcontrol arm by a c shaped clamp and two bolts.

Ive had the squeak before with mine too. It hasnt done that this year just the clunk noise.

The best thing to lubricate rubber is silicone grease. Short of that, anti-seize compound is great. I have used both for many years with great success, including my own bushings on my 02 dakota. BTW even though silicone grease is best for the rubber, anti-seize has a better longevity. Years ago we used to use used motor oil and kerosene to lube undercarriage bushings and rubber spacers in the leaf-springs. It kept things quiet and supple, but shortened the life by about 1/3. The compromise was worth the shortened life when the level of quality until failure was condsidered.

Works well, not quite as quiet as stock but they last longer than 2 months.

I have an '02 qc 4x4 and the sway bar brackets keep breaking I am on my third set and let me tell you about noise, it sounds like my truck is going to fall apart in the front end. all i have to do is back out of a parking spot and have everyone looking at me. if this set breaks again ill probably just take the darn thing off. the first time it broke i didn't even know it so i was driving around town like that for a few months and the noise stopped lets just say i was happy, then took it in for an oil change and guess what another 200.00 to get it remounted.

Where can you get front sway bar bushings for a 2002 4x4 besides the dealer?

Not to be a smart a$$ but look up two posts.
Auto parts also carry some, well at least for a 01 they do.

Hint A Quad cab uses Durango front bar parts.

? for the guy who had the metal sounding noise.
Can you tell if it is coming from the rear or the front?
I had a metal hammering sound in the front and it turned out to be my brake pads. Yes brake pads, the clips on the back rusted off thanks to IA watering and salting their roads non stop, and the pads were just sitting in there loose. The sound would go away when you would apply brake pressure and that is how i figured it out..

Dealer calls the noise the "chrysler thump"
I've driven chryslers for over 25 years and every one of them developed it.
Had one dealer tell me it was a loose skid plate on a Gran Fury.

Besides COOL (not), according to the auto parts listings.
Advance auto, Rockauto and many others carry them.
And so does eshocks, 01 & 02 come up as the same part in the auto part listings.
