Subject: power steering failure

I went off the road into a snow bank the other night. I bottomed out on road ice a little behind the passenger wheel. I tried rocking out before I knew I was bottomed and hit the revs pretty good in 4wd low. I got a tow truck to pull me out. I drive an hour and a half on the highway, in 4wd high, to get home. About halfway home, I notice the power steering isn't working anymore. When I get back, it looks like a mild amount of PS fluid has sprayed from the reservoir/pump, but the cap is still on the reservoir and there is no fluid leaking from the system. I buy some PS fluid and top off the system. PS still doesn't work.

I can't see anything visually wrong with the *most* visible components. The truck was sitting on ice in 26 degree weather for hours... maybe the fluid is frozen in the lines and needs a few days to thaw? If anyone has any idea what this might be, I would appreciate any thoughts. The thing that stumps me is that the PS was working until halfway home. I am hesitant/loathe to take it to a dealer to have it serviced until I am SURE that there is nothing I can do about it or can't figure it out.

Anyway, thanks for any help.

This seems to be a common problem. And what is more strange is that most of these pumps are going out during donuts, off-roading, accidents, etc. Not sure why this happens. My brother's went out the other day when he spun a three sixty on a wide dirt road.

You only have a few possibilities: cooler, low or hi-pressure lines, rack & pinion, pump. I would bet it is the latter.

Napa pump will run you about $65 for a new one. You will see complete used units on Ebay all the time with the pulley, resovoir and all. Keep your eye open.
