I changed to Amsoil ATF in my old 00 CC when it had 80K, ran great for another 60K until I wrecked it. I had it in the P/S also, nothing but good things to say about Amsoil ATF. I am going to change my 03's ATF and P/S fluid over to Amsoil in the next few months since it worked so good on the 00. I think I am going to run this truck all Amsoil, oil, ATF, P/S, gear lube.

AMSOIL ATF in trans since 4,000 miles. now 120,000. Every 30,000 I dropped pan and changed filter. I could have re-used the approx 7 quarts that was drained out each time if I wanted to (already had analysis done before drain teliing me it was still good) but it is too hard to catch and put back in. That being said, at the 100,000 tran filter change, my mechanic said "and how many miles are on this and what do you ahve in here?? It still looks brand new in there" Was as pink/red as new, no burn smell, and it had already tested as almost new. The trans fluid has not been "flushed" since AMSOIL was put in, it's never needed it.

My point, the AMSOIL synthetic ATF is great stuff. I can't comment on any other brand that makes a synthetic ATF for our trucks as I haven't looked for any nor tried any.

3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

I use the AMSOIL ATF and would NOT consider anything else
even if it was only four dollars per gallon.

Chrysler has recommended over time Chrysler ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, and ATF+4. Chrysler ATF+4 is the latest version. Bottom Line ... Dodge realized that their transmissions were weak and they had to reformulate.

Chrysler went from ATF+ (MS 7176B) to ATF+4 in less than ten years. Essentially they were trying to make up for shifting problems in some of their transmissions by "tweaking" the frictional properties of their fluid rather than recalling the affected units. The ATF+4 fluid does seem to have solved the problems with some of the transmissions from the mid 1990's.

However, I know many Dodge owners that have noticeable and significant improvements switching to Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF. They state that the transmission characteristics are better than when it was new.

Amsoil Synthetic Universal ATF is truely "Universal"

____________ ____________

Recommended for applications requiring the following specifications:

GM Dexron II, Dexron III; Ford Mercon, Mercon V; Chrysler ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, ATF+4; Mitsubishi Diamond SP II & III; Allison C-3 & C-4 and TES-295; Caterpillar Powershift Transmission TO-2 & TO-3; Voith Commercial Transmissions; GM Strasbourg (European Imports) and Opel; Applications requiring Honda Z-1 transmission fluids; Toyota Type T and T-IV
__________________________________________________

Special Note: Amsoil did offer a Synthetic ATF specifically for ATF +3/+4 applications about 3-4 years ago. However once they were able to integrate this additive chemistry into their Dexron/Mercon formulation, they discontinued making this second fluid.

The fluid changes were only a small part of the improvements made to the transmissions by DC. Engineering changes were made to most DC transmissions starting with the 1998 an 1999 year model vehicles accross the board. The fluid helped, but it was not a cure. BTW, I did switch my 1999 Dakota to the ATF+4 and have noticed improved shift quality and less debris in the pan when I do my service.

Well, I stand by my comments:

"... they (Dodge/Chrysler) were trying to make up for shifting problems in some of their transmissions by "tweaking" the frictional properties of their fluid rather than recalling the affected units."

The constant reformulation of D/C's ATF
was to avoid recalling existing transmissions.

Two family members of mine have owned three (3) Dodge/Chrysler Dealerships
for well over 30 years ... and my comments are from their mouths.

RECALL? Come on Steve, you know there is no grounds for recalling the transmissions. They pose NO safety threat. Poor quality, design or engineering without a safety issue at stake would not make any automaker recall transmissions in this day and age. At worst, it's grounds for losing some business and/or being ridiculed in forums like this. ;-)

If that is the recall I remember, it was the one concerning a "quick disconnect", it really was not a transmission concern. It was an external transmission fluid line concern.

You have me curious. I just recently ended a 6 year career in a Dodge service department and don't remember the recall to which you refer. I DO remember multiple service bulletins, many of which are similar to what you describe and none of them for any saftey related failures. They were all for the purpose of improving or enhancing shift points and shift quality and none of them were for internal transmission failures.
There was one recall on early 90's Dakota auto transmission that was deemed a safety concern and involved something about a check valve.

mddak,I had the pinion seal go at 10k, replaced under warranty. Have 46k now and it`s still fine and have been running Amsoil Series 2000 75-90 since 8k. I don`t think it matters if its synthetic or not, but is a quality issue as pinion seal leaks are relatively common.

Just wanted to add- and correct me if I am off a bit: the +4 is a synthetic OPTION to the dodge spec 7176 atf. I don't have a manual for the 2000+ dakotas in front of me so I dont know if dodge now specs atf+4 for new ATX's. But older ATX's spec'ed for 7176 can be flushed and filled with +4 for those who want sythetic ATF. Thats all.
