Subject: Installing Bigger Fuel Tank?
IP: Logged

Message:
I do alot of highway driving in my 99 V6 Dak. The thing is a gas hog turning 2400 RPM at 80MPH. I don't even get 200 gals per tank. I was told there is a 22 gal tank in some of these trucks. Would it be an easy swap. I would like to get close to 300 miles per tank. Thanks

I wonder if you should be looking at something
other than fuel quantity?

On a recent 300 mile trip in my 04 QC AWD 4.7
that weighs in at 4900 pounds on its own plus 380
pounds of passengers running 80 to 85 on I30 it
averaged 17 mpg or 374 miles on 22 gallons. For
the 300 miles back with an additional 700 pounds
of cargo the average dropped to 16.5 mpg or 363
miles on 22 gallons.

Back to the subject of upgrading the tank on mine
is 24 gallons and it has an option code for three
extra gallons. Not sure if the three extra
gallons are an increase from 21 to 24 or if there
are 3 more somewhere in the system.

Drive the speed limit and get a 20% increase in gas mileage. Your choice - you asked.

Speaking of how many gallons a Dakota can hold,
every Dakota I have owned (three so far) when I
go to fill it up and the auto shut off on the
gas pump clicks off, I can always *baby* it and
get up to four more gallons in the tank.

I do it all the time IF the gas station isn't
busy.. I don't want to piss a Ford or Chevy guy
off. lol

My Durango has a 25gal tank. Auto shutoff at about 22.5 and can pump it to about 24 normally.

I have a lot of problems with the pump shuttting off all during the fill up. I think it might be the routing of the filler hose that cause it to back up prematurely.

Ron do you have a RC or CC? if you have a CC you could swap a 24 gallon tank from a QC in there. I dont think that 24 gall would fit under a RC though. mine on my QC runs from the back of the drivers seat 'til about 5 or 6" from the rear axle(24 gallon).

Ron,
Take a look at your tank and measure where the straps are from a fixed point, and the space between the straps. Then find someone with a 22 gallon tank and have them measure the same. As long as the straps are in the same place, you should have no problem swapping. You will most likely need different straps. You may get lucky if the 22 gallon tank is the same depth as the smaller one, and not have to buy a different fuel pump.
