Subject: Im starting to hate my dakota

My 99 CC 5.2L 4x4 dak had all i wanted when i bought it in March. It has every option and looks amazing. Since ive had it tho its actually been a sorta POS. 4 diffrent sensors have gone out, the tranny is in need of a rebuild at 92k and ive babied the thing since i got it. It looks good but underneath the looks is some crappy engineering. From ball joints to plenum gaskets it just looks like this thing isnt gonna last. Im 16 years old and cant afford to have this truck nickel and dime me to death. Is anyone else as frustrated as me? Also do R/T's display the same problems as my truck? If not id really love to buy one as a replacement but only if its gonna last.

Maybe you should have done some research before you bought.
Why would the R/T be any different.?

Sometimes when you buy a used vehicle, you not only get the common failures for the vehicle, but also the previous owners' leftovers....meaning, often people choose not to handle problems as they arise and trade before making repairs. BUYER BEWARE on used vehicles.

ok that makes sense, i guess thats a life lesson learned. So an R/T wouldnt be any different even tho its gotta different transmission, motor, and its not 4x4? Im pretty sure ball joints dont fail on the 2WD's. Correct me if im wrong.

i read your story and i can totally relate. when i was 14 i started mowing lawns to get money for a car as my parents already told me i had to buy my own. I saved and when i was almost 17 i had over 4500 cash! Well i researched and researched looking for a super reliable vehicle that would last and last and get me through college. After reading ever article about every car and truck i could i settled on a toyota camry. i of course bought it used, and even found a 55 year old lady to buy one from. it had full records and everything done by the toyota dealer, even every oil change. She wanted 6000, we talked her down and bought it. Toyota reliability, full records and old lady driven, sounds like this thing will last, right?, WRONG! the car has just over 100k when i bought it, i sold it 13 months later and put about 20k miles on it. during that time i replaced

a/c comprssor (x2)
A/C clutch
Shocks/struts
brake pad/rotors
both cv joints
timing belt
oil pump
water pump
all belts
tires
2 speakers
1 wheel bearing

add to all that the tranny started not going into overdrive, the gas door no longer wanted to open without a screwdriver. To add insult to ingury the most i could get for it was 2000 bucks after i invested over 2 thousand into a car plus the original investment! The point is simply that when buying used nothing is a sure thing. Your story happened with dodge, mine with the company that has some of the most reliable cars on the planet. After that i bought a new nissan truck and at 100k miles only replaced
high pressure A/c hose
1 idle bearing
valve cover gaskets.

now i sold that and have my dodge, if it is only half as reliable as that nissan i will be golden. I think the only way to buy a car is new, it cost more upfront but the warranty and lack of frustration has made me a believer. sorry for the long post, im bored

Welcome to Dodge Country.

Dodge trucks look nice but are poorly engineered and even more poorly built.

explain to me how you've been "hating my dakota for years" when it is only a 2004. According to my math you've had that truck for about 4 months

My tires keep wearing out and my wiper blades don't wipe the glass "perfectly" clean, and I only have 165000 miles on it. Must be crappy engineering...I'll never own another Dodge.

I know...I'll go buy one of those Toyotas I saw driving around. What exactly does it mean when there are decals on it saying "I bought this LEMON from XXXX Toyota" and "Why won't Toyota stand behind their warranty?"? Would one of these be a more wise purchase than a Dakota?

Hey Keith, my Dak is exactly the same as yours ('99 Cc 4x4 5.2L) it has 120K miles on it.
I bought it last July, did about 15K miles (all gravel roads) since then, and its still in perfect shape and runs perfectly good. I would just say that whatever vehicule you want to buy, you're better do a real good checkup before you do. Most of the time people don't sell a truck or a car if its in great shape and running good.

Maintenance is the key. I don't care what brand of vehicle it is. If it hasn't been meticulously maintained, you will pay the consequences down the road.

Just from personal experience from living with 3 women and dating some as well over the years....I would never..repeat! never buy a vehicle from a woman. The level of neglect and oversights are amazing.

I don't care what kind of vehicle - Ford to Ferrari! Maintenance is the key. I tend to overstress this being that I am a Vehicle Maintenance Manager for a Government orgzanization ;-)

Concerning quality - Americans are piss poor designs. It isn't just Dodge...work on Fords for awhile and get with me.

Imports bring a higher standard of quality to the table, but you will also pay the price upfront too. I would go the import route again, but I still can't see paying $10k for a underpowered Frontier or Tacoma when I paid $7k for my 1998 Dakota R/T

What sort of maintenance are we supposed to do on sealed ball joints? Some of the farmers here suggest drilling a hole and installing a grease nipple. WTF?

That is poor design. And I gaurantee you that the Road/Turd you bought will end up costing way more than a Toy, in the long run.

When you eliminate the brand whores and the hill billies who didn't read the words in the OP, I think, from an objective standpoint, that Keith is justified in being pissed.

Read the post again, you illiterate hill billies.

go and read the forums, every make has its problems that normal maintenece wont fix. Toyota v-6 tacomas have a head gasket problem, how do you maintain that. the point jag was making is simpl that a vahicle will give you many many more trouble free miles when it is maintained well. This is regardless of make and model.

Keith, Sorry about all your Dak problems! Crap happen! you got to roll with it! What would it cost to fix the 99s problems & do a little preventative maintenance as oppossed to dumping it & getting adifferent ride? ALL used merch comes with a history--nothing will be problem free. Only you can figure if its worth your trouble time and money. As for me I LOVE my 2001 problems maintenance and all! It looks hot & its FAST & cant be beat for scewing with the ricers on friday nights!! and lets not forget that girls love em!!!!
