Hi folks,
I have an 89 Dakota w/3.9 V6 that has 302,XXX miles on it. (Yes I know that's a lot of miles, but I like this truck.) The problem has been the last couple of days the oil light flickers when I slow the truck down to a stop. It doesn't feel like the engine RPM's are low ( I recently did a tune up), and the factory oil pressure gauge only slightly drops. I know the factory gauge is electrical so it's hard to say whether it's right or not. My question is has anyone else had this problem? It could be the oil sending unit, the pickup tube/screen in the pan may need to be cleaned, the oil pump could be wearing out. I may just need to install a mechanical gauge and see what it is reading.

What do you folks think?? Thanks for any asistance...

Yep. Could be.
Also could be type of oil. What weight oil did you put in it?

This is common in high milers. Its just telling you that she's getting a little loose in her old age. You could try a higher viscosity oil if it bothers you, but its no big deal. AS long as the light goes off when it comes off idle, You're GOOD!

I am using Penn 10W-30. I've used that every since I've had it (new). Personally I think the oil pump is worn.

At 300,000 plus miles, that engine doesn't owe you
a dime.

If the truck is in good shape and you still like
it, rebuild the engine.

Even DC might want to hear about a 3.9 with that
many miles on it and still runnen.

Check your oil level. Might just be low

that many miles, try running 20w-50, 10w-40 or straight 30w. that'll help

I spoke to a friend last night and he is going to help me replace the oil pump. While we have the pan dropped we are going to go ahead and replace the rod bearings too. At least that way I know I have that covered. I would like to see how much wear the crank has on it anyway.
