I wanted to share my recent expierience with Chrysler and their extended warranty's, hopefully saving some of you from my fate. Honestly after this experience i am about to walk away from Chrysler all together, and never purchase a vehicle in the family again. (That means dodge now also--but I love my dodoge and my dodge dealership rocks.. this was my wifes car)

Chrysler stood firm on a policy to charge me for every repair on my car they possibly could. I had to fight for hours on the phone to get the smallest parts covered under my warranty. I have a Chrysler car... from a 5 star dealer, with the most expensive warranty... Im covered right? Nope... very few, and only very specific items are covered.

In this instance I had an electrical problem which caused all of the tail lights / break lights / turn signal to stop working. They tried to charge me 2.5 hours to diagonis the battery has needing replacement (Which im happy to pay parts on... its a consumable I understand that). The Wiring harness from the battery to the Starter needed to be replaced... so we got into an argument over a 'cable' vs a 'wire' (Electrical Wires being covered by my warranty electric cables arent...) Then it was wireing harnesses that were all black and melted... well the wires are covered... but the parts they pluged into arent(The tail lights) Reguardless that the 5 star tech diagnoses the problem as being caused by a warrantied part... Chrysler's argument for not covering the tail-lights... "Maybe a bad bulb or something else caused the problem, how can we tell it was the warrantied part"..... well YOUR technecian SAID IT WAS.

Ever laughed at that David Spade commercial for Capital one credit cards, where all he says is NO... this is Chrysler and how they back their product. The answer is NO unless you can prove otherwise... never again will they see my business.

Your disappointment should be pointed more at your dealership than at Chrysler or any warranty that you have purchased. Chrysler Service Contract terms are very specific and easy to understand, not to mention, a bit liberal if I might add. The dealership representative either, did not communicate well or did not follow the provisions of the service contract. In either case, it must be frustrating.

Yeah I met a guy in my service department who bought a Ram 2500 that had a bad alignment off the lot which in turn chewed up a coupld of his tires. The dealer wasn't willing to do anything for him since they were Michelins instead of Wranglers, which Chrysler warranties. IF a warrantied defect causes other failures, all that stuff needs to be covered. It's just plain good business.

the last 3 DC vehicles my family has bought from our local dealer each had a different mid/major problem within several months after the regular warranty ran out. the dealership repaired the problems as a 'courtesy warranty' repair with no charge to us. that includes our old grand caravan needing a new shortblock - free.
as for extended warranties, they have covered almost every problem i've had. even if the techs didn't think i needed to fix something yet (like my shot control arm bushings) they put it under my extended warranty anyway as a 'customer requested warranty repair'. my $100 deductible is a heck of a deal for all new front suspension bushings (8 total). my $100 deductible is a great deal for getting 4 new balljoints when the techs noticed the old ones had cracked boots.

i've saved so much more money than what i payed for the warranty its almost unbelievable. yes, that means i've had my share of problems, but they were all fixed. yes, i had to call the dc ext. warranty line myself a couple times to get a repair covered, but the rest of the times it was the service writers doing their job well, and verifying warranty applicability in a timely manner. thats what should happen at a 5-star dealer. yes, customer service plays a big part of the 5-star rating - its not just sales. (i asked the 5-star-neutral dc warranty people once.)

and yes, the dealer tries to screw me every chance they get with teh non-warranteed stuff, like wanting $35 to change the 3rd brake lightbulb. lol.
but never had more than one minor problem with warranteed stuff being covered as it should.

there has been stuff that i would have liked to have had covered but weren't. so what. i'd also like free tire rotations from the dealer, but they just don't offer that either. so what.
so for the non-warrantied stuff i either do it myself or take it somewhere cheaper than the dealer. i also get my free rotations at america's tire co.

overall it it well worth it to have the extended warranty imo.

thats my story and i'm stickin to it.

and don't think that was a personal attack on alashaman, it wasn't. it was just a diff opinion and a diff perspective on the issue.

Just a guess, but you didn't ask them to do something you could a have done yourself in only a few minutes, right? Call it "screwing you" if you want to, but most dealerships make no apologies for charging full rates for all repairs, minor or not. Try to get a computer repairman to make a minor repair on your home computer without charging a set minimum.

It does appear like you have a dealership that understands the 5-Star ideals. A little hint for you and anyone else reading this, if you were to have the dealership do some of the stuff that you have done "cheaper" somewhere else, I bet they would be even more generous with warranty assistance on questionable coverage.

JasonB,
Your last "little hint" there brings up a related topic...

Sometimes it does make sense to pay a little more for something, if only to create/strengthen a business relationship. Such as occasionally bringing your truck to the dealer for maintenance work you could get done "cheaper" elsewhere. That way when you do have a problem, there's a chance they'll make a little more effort to help you. Sure, it'd be nice to think that they'll treat all their customers equally... but they will likely go the extra mile for a familiar face.

Also, I'll fill up my truck at the "more expensive" local gas station down the street ,every now and then, instead of at the "cheaper" station out on the highway. For a couple extra bucks a month they know me well enough to help me out when I'm in a jam. Like when my wife went to leave for a long business trip one morning only to find she had a flat tire on her (company) car. Instead of throwing the donut on (no full-size spare on the company car & I'm not letting my wife make a 500 mile round trip on a donut) I just took it down the street & they fixed it on the spot. If I wasn't a familiar face, they would have said "You can pick it up the afternoon"- which would have been too late.

My regular customers enjoy some of the best service they will ever experience...anywhere, anytime. One time Joe that drives in today will get courteous and prompt service, but I may not always spend 20 extra minutes on the phone trying to accomplish things for him as I would my regulars. Same as when I go to my favorite sports bar n grill, they know me and are often more generous with their time and the amount of Jack in my Jack-n-Coke than they were when I was a first-timer.

Seems to me the customer goes to the dealer, not the other way around. When a Chrysler dealer comes to my home to change a taillight, I'll pay him $35.

JasonB is right, once in a while i throw the dealership an oil change(during winter) or let them do my state inspection (same price everywhere) and the service advisor bent over backwards when he could. BUT if i had another advisor write the repair I always seemed to have MAJOR problems.
I had an EMERGENCY repair done at dealer and the A**hole tryed to deny my emissions coverage on a part that was clearly stated as a covered part. He said he had just returned from "Chrysler's waranty school so he was an expert".
JasonB's correct when he keeps saying to find a co-operating dealer but unfortunatly some dealers look to see where truck was bought before they'll play nice with you.

I wish I could balme all of these problems on the dealership... but i personally contacted Chrysler warranty services and talked to a string of usless people. They quoted me things in "MY" contract i had to record of... when i asked them to Fax / Email me a copy of what they were reading I was told... THEY HAD NO ABILITY TO DO EITHER... Snail mail was the absolute best they could use to communicate this to a customer... Give me a break.. Chrsyler can afford a fax machine.

Bottom Line.... Dealership... Shaver Poitiac / Jeep / Eagle will NEVER see me of anyone I know again... Chrysler Extended warrantys... never again.

After multiple issues with both of these companies I am posting this as a warning to the rest, hopefully it can save you some headaches.

My Dodge dealer? EXCELLENT, helpful, nice, customer service oriented... and most important they back what they sell and customer satisfaction isnt just a slogan. (Fillmore Family Moters in California)

alashaman, just DON'T put ALL your trust into
them. I did once to a stealership and they ALMOST
got away with screwing me good on a used mini
van. I shoved the van up the salesmans ass the
next day when I found out using CARFAX he had
lied to me BIG time! Guess what, he told me it
was not MY baby because I bought the van. I told
him if he didn't want a broken nose he'd give me
my down payment check back. He did and I left the
van set.

I bought several units for that dealership. See
what one dishonest salesman can do? I'll never
buy another unit from them untill I know that
salesman and his boss have left that dealership.

Warranty problems are not Crysler`s only. GM, Ford, imports etc, all have more or less the same issues. In my case, i got a 00 Dakota slt CC 4.7 2WD 5 sp manual with a 3.92 LSD with every option but ABS. (ABS doesn`t work for me because under emergence, my brain forgets the ABS and does its function instantly and so automaticly that it hurts more than help. My wife`s car, i deffinitly order with ABS). I bought the service contractor`s extended warranty til 75K or 7 years for around 1000 dollars and now, do the math. At 14 K miles, replaced upper and lower, left and right ball joints and control arms. At 50k miles, replaced the AC compressor and belt. At 60K replaced again right upper and lower ball joints and control arms and outter left tierod. At 70K, replaced the transmission for a brand new one, after an infruitfull replacement of almost every thing in the old one. Right at that opportunity, they,(dealer),REPLACED the entire diff, after unsucssesfull attempt to fix it too. At 75k REPLACED left lower ball joint, and so far, i had lots and hot arguments with dealers, but they honored the service contractors that i honored by paying in full. At 93k, actual, Replaced the upper left and right ball joints for a no more problems Moog greaseble for 360 dollars and am geting the bills together to submit it to Dainler Crysler to be reimbursed due to the glorious victory we are enjoing about the ball joints RECALL. If your dealer can not "dupplicate" the problem, find another safety oriented shop to fix it and charge DC. Don`t wait cause sun, the dealers will be able to do it and you will not have your prob solved. The extended warranty is by the way, the best protection you can have. Just get to know how it works and some times, don`t ask, REQUEST, if you will. About my truck, it is at it`s best ever.
