I currently have a 2000 4x4 v8 and am looking at a loaded 04 QC. It has the HD Electric Full Time Transfer Case ($395 option). So how does it behave differently when I flip the switch from AWD to 4WD High?

In AWD, the xfer case acts as a full differential, sending power to whats spinning. In 4WD, the xfer case locks into a 50:50 front:rear power split. ...insert warnings about running in 4WD on dry pavement... :-)

I have an '01 AWD and would point out that, short of off-roading, that the AWD improves traction and handling under marginal conditions. I would also note that since all the same components are spinning that there is no gas milage penalty for AWD versus 4WD. Lurkin is correct about the rest of it.

I have a 03, 5.9 QC with the full time. Last winter, on a stretch of pact snow, my daughter (wanted another driver so as not to be totally bias) and I each accelerated hard two times in AWD and two times in 4WD. All passes in 4WD the rear fish tailed, however, in AWD the starts were straight as an arrow! This is probably a simple AWD system but it seems to work every bit as good as the high end AWD systems. Merry Christmas!

Jimmy,

Are you looking at the Red one in Memphis? I
just bought the Black one in St Louis and
understand there are two others available on the
west coast.

I bought a 04 QC 4.7 AWD last week and have been
driving it in snow and ice on and off road for
the past few days.

The vast majority of the time AWD has been
successful in getting up hills and through slick
spots. Although a few times I have needed to
switch to four low to start going up icy hills.
The big advantage of AWD is that you can steer!

This is what my driveway has looked like for
days. I pulled a 2wd 5.2 EC with 1100 pounds of
tools in the back over this hill without
spinning in 4 low.
