I just moved to Portland, OR with my 2WD 2002 Quad Cab Dakota (SLT). This truck still has the horrible tires it came with and I'm driving up snow covered Mt. Hood this weekend. My local Le Schwab recommended Wild Country XTXs on this thing. Are these tires any good? Will they get the job done when it comes to snow? What about chains - should I consider them at all? I'm also thinking of picking up some tube sand...

Thanks for any help,
Andy

I have Wild Country XTX's on my truck, and I live in Northern Michigan, and I am experiencing the worst that winter can throw at us right now! I have 245/16R75's and they seem to do the trick, but I also have 4x4. I would say that they are a good tire, obviously not as good as a BF Goodrich tire, but for the price, they do alright in winter driving. If you are going to a mountain with lots of snow, tubes of sand are a must. I would suggest no less than 150 lbs worth of weight in the bed, even more would be better. As for chains, can't help you, they're not legal in Michigan.

I have seen some decent tread patterns on some of the Wild Country tires, and they definately are affordable. But I wouldn't expect long, comfortable, quiet life out of them.
