Chrysler Group Recalls Dodge Durangos, Dakotas to Replace Ball Joints
Friday December 10, 6:05 pm ET
* Company will replace front suspension upper ball joints on approximately 600,000 2000-2003.5 MY Dodge Durango 4x4 SUVs and Dodge Dakota Pickups * An additional 400,000 4x2 SUVs and Pickups in the same model years to be covered with extended 10 year/100,000 mile warranty

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Chrysler Group will recall approximately 600,000 Model Year 2000-2003.5 Dodge Durango 4x4 SUVs and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks to replace front suspension upper ball joints that may be subject to progressive wear.

In addition, to alleviate potential customer concerns, the company will extend the warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles on the suspension upper ball joints on an additional 400,000 MY2000-2003.5 Durango and Dakota 4x2 vehicles.

Repairs will be made at no cost to owners. Owners of vehicles covered by this action who have previously paid for the repair will be reimbursed by Chrysler Group.

Chrysler Group's internal investigation has shown that the front suspension upper ball joints on some vehicles may be subject to corrosion and progressive wear. If this condition is ignored for an extended period of time, it could lead to front end noise, tire wear, and in extreme cases separation of the front suspension. There have been no substantiated reports of injuries associated with this condition on these vehicles.

Owners will be notified of the action by letter beginning later this month.

GO figure, mine's a 98. Guess they figure the 98 and 99 models are too old to recall. No big deal if their wheels fall off eh?

Well maybe there wasn't as many reported cases with the 98 and 99's, but before selling my 98 Durango, I had to replace every ball joint on it. My front two were shot and the back two were on the verge. For my Dakota, I have yet to replace them. Have went through 3 sets of rotors though.

Yuh huh they are too on the back... The muffler bearing leaks after time and the Durango back ball joints fail.

There goes the trade-in value, right down the drain. If Dodge had voluntarily and quietly done the recall years ago, when it knew it had a problem, that would have been one thing, but to be forced by the government to do it is another thing altogether. After seeing all those photos of Dakotas with wheels falling off on the 6:00 news, who's going to buy a used Dakota now? Even if not all model years are affected, the brand name is tarnished. The Dakota is history.

I apologize...wrong choice of terms there. I mean upper/lower. I was in a hurry, should read over what I type. My brother-in-law currently has a 98 Durango SLT, ball joint problems as well. He hasn't had much luck with that thing. My dakota's been pretty good to me, I can't complain. Handles great in the snow, which in Michigan, is all so important.

I doubt this will affect resale...

nobody will remember what was on the evening news about it in a few weeks. People who don't own a Dakota or Durango are not paying attention to the recall.

Owned a 99D (103,000). Just took it to the dealer for front end screehing noise. Sounds like metal on metal. Dealer replaced control arm bushings and lower ball joint on front left. I insisted on an inspection thinking the recall would include 99 D's. No luck.
P.S. If you have power windows that do not work: Hold the control down and bang on the door panel very hard for about a minute. Picked that up talking to mechanics at dealership. Saved me some bucks.
