Many of you are describing noise and other complaints that could be caused by control arm bushings and not the ball joints being investigated. My 1999 Dakota 2WD has excessively worn control arm bushings which are noisy every time I turn into a parking place and other similar maneuvers. There is a DC Sevice Bulletin (#02-006-00 released 10-27-2000) that describes the condition as well as information concerning replacement bushings that do not require replacement of the control arms.

jasonb, good point. wouldn't control arm bushings make noise under braking or starting from a stop? not the same noise generated from bad balljoints.

That one's a bit beyond my knowledge. I'll see if I can find out.

I think that the junk warped rotors are causing the suspension to shake too much. This puts too much torsion on the ball joints and exacerbates the wear. Fix the rotors and the ball joints follow.

Just an opinion.

you obviousl have NO mechanical knowledge. a warped rotor will in NO WAY cause a ball joint to fail. If that were true,,, every medium sized GMC SUV's and a lot of Pontiacs would have the same problem, but the warped rotors in them are not correlated with bad joints, hence your theory, opinion is wrong.

Hey jasonb when my 99rt started to do the shake, rattle when I rolled, it was the control arm bushings driver side. Changed them and because of this site I changed the ball joints.

JasonB,

The front sway bar bushings can get extremely noisy, especially in the cold. You would think the front end is about to come off. Grease or replace and it`s like a new truck. I bet more than a few have been leery and or surprised when told the noise is just the bushings.

Had a 2WD 2000 Durango in the shop yesterday for noisy right side control arm bushings AND both upper ball joints worn. The customers' aftermarket service contract picked up the bill for all of that and a water pump replacement. $770 of work cost the customer a $100 deductible.

Ive had some popping/shaking problems for a while now, so I replaced all of my ball joints with Moogs several months back. Things felt better, but I still had a lot of play in the wheel and most of the noise was still there. This past weekend I installed alll new poly bushings for both upper and lower control arms and the truck now feels like it's brand new again. While the poly bushings are a bit squeaky going over speed bumps, etc, overall I would highly recommend this mod.

Ok, I'm new to this, I have been searching for DC Service Bulletin 02-006-2000 10/27/2000 and so far have been unsuccessful. Can someone help me find this? My '00 has been making weird noises for quite some time when I turn into parking spaces, tight turns, etc. I have an apt. with my mechanic and I want him to check out the ball joins as well as the bushings.
Thanks
