I know I'm not the only one out there with a 99 Dak. What about us? Are we up a sh*t creek now or what?

You're up the creek from the sounds of it like us with a 2000 or higher 2wd Dakota. I will never buy a DC again. I have had so much trouble with mine from fuel pumps, low fuel economy, new engine fan, ball joints, high wear and tear on the break pads, etc.... Most of this happened under warranty. The main problem I have now is the ball joints, and I cant sell it because it will not pass a safety and you can hear the noise if you drive it.

This is really frustrating. My dad has an 2003 Durango and when you take the front end apaprt it is exactly the same as my 99 DAK. I guess it all comes down to money. That's ok though, I will sue for $$$$$ if my tire ever falls off while I'm driving. Now that the word is out and blame is being accepted we shold have no problem.

I feel for you guys.I have a '97 Dak and I had to replace the ball joints on both sides of my truck at my expense.so my modle year is also not included. The problem exists all the way back to the 97 modle year.I guess all of use from 99 on back are being told screw you your trucks are to old to do the recall work.Or is it they think that all of the 99 on back trucks have all ready been sent to the scrap heap.i think they know most of us in the early modle years have all ready done the work ourselves so why pay to do the work again,it saves them lots of $$$
The one thing I do know is after this I will never buy another dodge product again, and I will tell anyone who will listen about how bad the dodge products are.

I have a 97 dak and have been faithful to mopar for years. (In car love) I have a collection of chargers cudas and demons, a few dusters and lots of mopar parts/motors/etc. THIS REALLY PISSES ME OFF. My truck is the same as the 2000(give or take plastic), and it has had soooooooooooooooo many issues with the front end. I’m overall happy with the rest of the truck; it’s just that I’ve never had a flakier front end, ever, in anything. I’ve had shops rpl the front end parts numerous times under warranty, and its still just a matter of time before the front end craps out again. I personally will never buy again. My family, friends and business associates share my sentiments. I liked the new magnum, and was looking seriously, but after hearing this, we purchased a Colorado instead(for mama bear). Shame on you dodge for your lack of responsibility. I wrote to the NTSB, and DC numerous times over the years, knowing this was a defect. It’s simple; I gave good money and should receive a fair product. Products have limitations, yet this is simply an engineering flaw and the lack of responsibility by DC to acknowledge their previous clients is poor business. Thanks to anyone else with a pre-2000 front end for hammering DC on our screw job. The dealer/numerous professionals have acknowledged my front end was a flaw, and I was anticipating this, saving receipts/boxes/faulty parts for what I thought DC would make right. I guess I was wrong, but it will cost a lot more then the 48 million to fix the recalled vehicles through loss of sales. Right is right. I actually would like to hear anyone that has had a positive experience with their dak front end. Haven’t heard of or witness a dak that doesn’t bang in the front, or whip the timing chain around (if it’s a V6). I also haven’t heard of modifying a truck just to make it drivable/reliable when it’s new. I modify to hot rod and rock and roll, not so I can own a disposable truck. That was my prior thought process on asian made trucks, yet they kill my dak in reliability. Frustrating. At least they had a past.

Pistontorqued - Here's the positive experience you asked to hear about - Have extra stress due to torsion bars being cranked up and sometimes carrying a plow; but no problems. Sorry to hear you had problems with yours though. I've been aware this could be a weak point and I'm glad it sounds like I'll be getting a fresh start on new ball joints. I'm a fan of the old mopars too, have a '69 Barracuda. Did you know that on some of those old muscle cars thay snapped the zerk fittings off after greasing them at the factory (to promote sales claiming less maintenence was required). So although their past is checkered, mopar is still my brand of choice - switching brands may just get you different problems. Known problems can be dealt with using upgraded parts; I'lll bet you've upgraded parts on your older mopars - I know I have. Good luck !

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Hay guys, it's NOT just Dakotas! My wife has a
2001 Dodge Mini Caravan, front wheel drive. Both
left and right upper ball joints are bad also. You
can feel it in the steering wheel.

I think the engineer that came up with the idea to
save the company six cents per ball joint by doing
away with the grease fitting ought to be hung by
his nuts insted of getting a promotion!

It's no wonder non American auto makers are
selling more and more in the US every year. Look
at the total JUNK DC, GM and Ford are trying to
shove up our rear ends!

I like to keep American men and women working but
it's nuts when safety goes out the window just to
sell their JUNK.

I guess us 99' owners are screwed. Its not like the dealership is there to help you get things taken care of. I just can't believe there is a significant difference between the 99' and the 00' model. I've already had to replace my 99' upper and lower ball joints and I only have 36k miles on the truck.

Hey,

I went to the DC web site customer assistance and sent an e-mail asking about us 99'ers. Good News, I got a call back and they gave me an address and case number to send in my paid repair bill and they will reimburse me for my 99! Woo Hoo!

Really? Sounds kind of...well...unbelievable. I'm guessing they wanted your VIN, etc right?

Can you pass on that mailing address just for future reference?

Thanks.

The reason (as determined by the NHTSA) that other Dakotas and Durangos are NOT being recalled is that the combination of design vs part does NOT lend itself to surprise separation. They have been found to have a noise indicative of failure before separation occurs. Meaning...you don't have a quiet ball joint in the morning and a separation of the same ball joint in the afternoon. This gives the driver/owner a notice to have a repair completed before they cause a collision.

Those of you who know of a ball joint failure (or any other failure) on your vehicle and then are involved in a collision in which cause is atleast partially due to the failure that you chose to not repair are putting yourself in a liability situation in which you may not be prepared (financially or otherwise) to be. Auto makers are not always responsible for repairing failures on your vehicle. Just like worn brakes or worn tires, if you allow that to cause a collision (these are NOT accidents), then you are liable.

Sure its:

Customer relations
PO Box 21-8004
Auburn Hills MI 48321

Attn: File # XXXXXXX

You need to send an e-mail to them first to get a case# to include.

As far as the VIN I did put it into their web app for recalls here is the link. Its wrapped so you will need to copy and paste it.

http://www.dodge.com/webselfservice/dodge/index.jsp?screenName=recall&country=us&emailUrl=goToEmailForm%28%27R%27%29

or you can just go to the dodge owners area and select contact dodge.

Good Luck!

Well JasonB, it was nice of you to give us the same speach that my father gave me.

Although, that doesnt really cover the reason why they agreed to repay MoparHead after the fact. I really dont care why they decided to repay him (no offence MoparHead). The bottom line is that they did and perhaps some day when I'm facing this situation they will also for me and everyone else.

Hey ONE,

Why dont you go hi-jack another thread. This is a legitimate question which I think can help many others now that the Ball Joint recall has been announced. I know I'm not the only one who was thinking about this issue concerning the pre 2000's Dakotas.

Thanks,

And sorry all
