Listen guys. They are ONLY going to replace the uppers on the trucks listed by the recall. NO 2wd's, NO 99's or 04's.

I think it's criminal that they think they can limit the recall to these vehicles. They all have the same joints in them and they all wear for the same reason. DC insists that this is not a safety issue. "Yeah Right"!

I just replaced the scrap metal impersonating "Safe" ball joints off of my 00 R/T this last weekend. Off the truck they did a good imitation of a baby rattle. Did I mention that the truck only had 20 k when it started to have wandering and pulling and 35k when the joints started to click?

I took the truck to the Stealership in 2002 with wandering and "Pull to the Left" and was told that I had bad tires, rotors, needed alignment. Anything but the truth. I was charged for all the above and the problem was never resolved. I lost heart and gave up trying.

Now I feel somewhat vindicated. I would feel better if the recall was expanded to ALL DC ball joints.

FILE THOSE REPORTS!!! IT COSTS YOU NO MORE TIME THAN A POST HERE AND MAY GAIN YOU IN THE LONG RUN!!!

I'll bet a dollar that DCX replaces the balljoints with ones from a different manufacturer, but still with no grease fittings. I wonder if they'll use good ones if I take them in with the truck?

Since the Dakota 2WD uses the same ball joints, they should replace them as well. For all of you with 2000-2004 2WD Dakotas, please send a complaint!

Agency seeks recall of 600,000 Dodge trucks
Suspension problem seen with Durango, Dakota pickups

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:03 a.m. ET Dec. 10, 2004

WASHINGTON - Federal safety regulators want 600,000 Dodge Durangos and Dakota trucks recalled because their wheels could fall off, but the auto maker doesn’t believe the defect is dangerous, a company spokesman said.

Federal safety regulators have asked DaimlerChrysler AG to recall Durango sport utility vehicles and Dakota pickups from the 2000 to 2003 model years, Chrysler spokesman Max Gates confirmed. He stressed the models haven’t been recalled.

The company is planning to respond to the government’s request early next week, he said Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the recommendation, first reported by CBS News, after investigating reports of upper ball joint separation on dozens of vehicles. When the upper ball joint separates, the suspension can collapse and the wheel can fall off.

There are reports of several crashes but no injuries due to the issue in NHTSA’s investigation file.

Gates said Chrysler recognizes there is a problem with the upper ball joints, but “we do not think it rises to the level of a safety defect.”

Gates said a vehicle owner would hear noise coming from the vehicle well before the upper ball joint failed. Mechanics also will find out if an upper ball joint needs to be repaired during routine maintenance, Gates said.

Gates said if the upper ball joint fails, it is most likely to happen at low speeds and during turns.

In reply to the posts about inspections and how the ball joints were found to be ok. The ball joints in these trucks are loaded when the truck is on a frame contact hoist, and if you test them with the suspension hanging, most all will pass. The proper way of checking these ball joints is by jacking up each wheel under the control arm and then trying to push the wheel in and out. Just raising the truck and shaking the wheel will result in false passes. A lot of dealer techs do not pay attention to this and even if they did, why would they say anything? They would only get more warranty work!

I just registered my complaint! Hey, I'm a woman and I know that the ball joint on the 4x4 is the same as on the 2WD. I have a 2000 Dakota but not a 4x4...What about me? Why do I wait to see if my wheels fall off before my 100,000 mile guarantee wears out?
