#1 reason to dump Dodge. There Denial of a real problem even though we can clearly see there is one:

Agency seeks recall of 600,000 Dodge trucks
Suspension problem seen with Durango, Dakota pickups

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:03 a.m. ET Dec. 10, 2004

WASHINGTON - Federal safety regulators want 600,000 Dodge Durangos and Dakota trucks recalled because their wheels could fall off, but the auto maker doesn’t believe the defect is dangerous, a company spokesman said.

Federal safety regulators have asked DaimlerChrysler AG to recall Durango sport utility vehicles and Dakota pickups from the 2000 to 2003 model years, Chrysler spokesman Max Gates confirmed. He stressed the models haven’t been recalled.

The company is planning to respond to the government’s request early next week, he said Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the recommendation, first reported by CBS News, after investigating reports of upper ball joint separation on dozens of vehicles. When the upper ball joint separates, the suspension can collapse and the wheel can fall off.

There are reports of several crashes but no injuries due to the issue in NHTSA’s investigation file.

Gates said Chrysler recognizes there is a problem with the upper ball joints, but “we do not think it rises to the level of a safety defect.”

Gates said a vehicle owner would hear noise coming from the vehicle well before the upper ball joint failed. Mechanics also will find out if an upper ball joint needs to be repaired during routine maintenance, Gates said.

Gates said if the upper ball joint fails, it is most likely to happen at low speeds and during turns.

Good Luck with the Tacoma! I had a 4-runner and a p-up(before they had a name for it) and both went well over 200K miles w/o any problems. Actually my 4 runner did burn out the automatic tranny, but that was at 160K miles. Rust was the major reason why I got rid of both of them. Parts were just as expensive as Dodge parts are so don't believe most when they say they are more expensive. That would be Honda. In any case, my '90 & 96 GMc's also went over 200K with out major problems. My '00 Dakota QC has been a problem child since new! Now at 80K miles I find myself wondering if it will make it to 100K. I love the truck, but it is VERY disapointing and very frustrationg dealing with Dodge. I had my eye on a GMC Sierra, but after going to the car show and reading reviews, I think I'm leaning towards the Nissan Titan. With trucks like the Dakota and companys like DC, is it any wonder why we're going Jap?

I too am thinking (just thinking) about other trucks after having my 02 ext.cab 4X4 4.7 with only 20k miles for just 8 short months (bought it with just 12k). I love the looks, the power and the interior, but it just has lots of little quirks that bug me. The driver window is jerky going up and down ( dealer fixed it once, but it's out of warranty now). Everytime I turn the steering wheel hard left or right (like in a parking lot) something in the front end snaps (ball joints are OK, tho). The right front caliper is hanging now. On cold mornings something under the hood squeaks for about 5 minutes til it warms up (not the belt). And the other day when I started it up (cold again) there was a loud clicking coming from under the hood. I popped it open and it was some sort of relay or solenoid that is mounted on the left inner fender. Oh yea, and I know this might sound weird, but sometimes when I'm slowing down and start to make a left hand turn, the darn thing nearly stalls for a second or two.

I bought a 92 GMC with 5k on it 11 years ago and that thing never had ANY problems like my Dak does. As a matter of fact, other than regular maint. stuff, the only thing I had to do was put an alternator on it. I'm just afraid this Dakota's gonna let me down.....but I like it so much, darn it...

You can have problems like that with anything. My last Toyota had a mystery squeek like that under the hood too, so don't think that's a Dodge thing. You may need to have the IAC on the TB cleaned to adddress the slow rpm issue. I've had GM junk with transmission and transfer case problems; my Dodge is much more reliable. Sometimes its just your luck of the draw - good luck if you go elsewhere.

the tacoma is a nice truck good luck.

You know though sometimes I wonder how much the prob is a mechanic or dealer that can't or does want to fix your problem, a vibration should be found easily. While the truck might have it's quarks so does everything. My girlfriends mom has an 02 highlander limited mad money, that the engine built sluge and cooked itself. It is not only dodge it is all the companies trying to make some kind of profit.
