92 v6 3.9 dakota sport...... Has been sitting idle most of the summer and drove to Home Depot 10 miles away last week to grab some lumber. Driving on the highway, 65-70 MPH, then the temp shoots up, and the truck feels like it's dying- no acceleration, hard to turn, rough idle, and when I stopped, a burning smell from under the hood. Luckily, got to HD before it pegged, then an hour later when I drove home- fine UNTIL I was almost home, then the same thing. Felt the hoses and hard to tell if they had coolant, as they were hot, but not too firm. Is this typical of the T-stat not opening? And how much damage did I do to the engine? It's a 92 with 98,0000 (we go to HD and the dump with it mostly!) Thanks!

Sounds more like a almost plugged converter.
Next time it happends check to see if it's red
hot and feel if exhaust is flowing out of tale
pipe ok.

I doubt you harmed the engine yet. I would not
let this continue for it may later.

Let us know what you find..

Sounds like it could be a thermostat, could be a lot of things too though. The only thing that caught my eye is that you said it was hard to turn, indicating to me that it is possible the belt is slipping and not turning the power steering pump. In that case it probably isn't turning the water pump either. May want to check the belt tensioner and the belt itself. I have heard of guys that had a belt on too long and it glazed over on the back and sometimes wouldn't grab all the pulleys. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions.....I'll spend some time this weekend. I already bought the new t-stat, figured it's the cheapest way to start and its not that hard a job- done it before. The truck sometimes sits 2 months without being driven so my neigbor suggested the t-stat as the place to start. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.....
