The power will just take the path of least resistance. You shouldn't have issues towing, many trucks on the road have open differentials and do just fine.

ok, thanX.

but lets talk about drag racing...i know i know its a qc truck.

how much would limited slip help?
how hard is it to change my truck to limited slip?
how much would it cost?

the reason im asking is i know with a stock engine that the power isnt over whelming and im able to get a decent launch, but what if i was to install a turbo? then when i go to launch i would sit there spinning one tire...right?
making limited slip more desirable.

thoughts/comments?

You can be 100% sure if you check the sticker in the glove box. Corporate 9.25 anti-spin is LSD.

You can also be 100% sure if you give me the last 8 digits of your VIN. I can look up for you the original equipment list on and DC vehicle.

Yes, a limited slip would help a lot once you start making some power, as to how much in a 1/4 mile, no clue. Installing a limited slip should probably be left to a professional, although some people do it themselves if they have the knowledge. I'm not 100% sure, but I think there is a locker out there that installs pretty easy and can be done by most people, but i'm not sure exactly who makes it.

if i wanted to go from open diff to limmited slip id go the LOCKER route.you can install a real locker(detroit locker,loc-rites,ARBs etc their are many)cheaper than getting a new limited slip and while maby noisier(clic clic)the locker is betterbecause it locks you rear wheels when engaged.

Nick..you want what I've got.
I have a 2001 QC 4x4 that came with an open diff.
Rear tire spun every time the roads got wet.
Had to put it into 4wd if I wanted to beat the tarted up Civic beside me......PAIN IN THE BUTT!
I went to a local 4wd parts supplier and got the POWERTRAX NO-SLIP locker to fit my diff.
Cost was about $500.00 and I installed it myself (with a buddy).
The included instructions make it fool-proof.
I have limited mechanical experience and everything still went fine.

The system offers full lock at all times ( ie: no driver involvement ) but releases during cornering to release the stress that builds up on the axle due to the tires traveling different paths during the corner.

The unit basically replaces the spider gears in the differential.
The unit is able to go fron unlocked to locked in as little as 1/8 th of a revolution (maybe less).

The only drawback is a little"shudder"in the driving experience during dry cornering due to the unit releasing and then trying to engage during the corner but not being able to until the corner is completed. A very minor annoyance. Passengers don't even notice it.

The benefit is no rear wheel tire spin at launch on dry roads( of course you can always achieve spin on wet or dirt roads with enough throttle ) and no clutch packs to wear out , as in a factory limited slip.

Hope this helps...

I was looking into limited slips and lockers and all the info I found on the powertrax was that they aren't that durable if you beat on it it will break this is just what I have found from this site and dodgetrucks.org. I ended up buying a dana trac lock its a clutch type limited slip but works realy well and when I bought it it was $169 but I beleive its $230 now. My mechanic installed it for under $200 I can't remember exactly. I have a 99 4x4 cc w/ a 5.2L 5 speed part of the reason I stayed away from powertrax was I'm kinda hard on it and I gues a manual trans is harder on it also. The dana is a little better than the factory part from what I have heard. I like it alot though I had alot of traction problems on dry pavment before.

The Powertrax is designed for vehicles that see "normal" off-road and on road use in vehicles without heavy modifications. Mods. like 4.93 gears and 40 inch tires and pumped up horsepower.
So for most applications they're fine. And , yes, the dana trac-lock or other switchable lockers are more capable in hard core off-roading.

Nick, an open diff allows one wheel to spin on a slippery surface making the other wheel act as an anchor effectively keeping the rear end from kicking out. Manufacturers assume people are idiots and this system is "safer" from an idiots point of view and a lawyers point of view, if you get my drift.
The locked rear end won't kick out as early in a given situation , but when it does there is only driver skill left to countersteer it back into a straight path.(something "idiots"lack)
That said any truck owner knows the back will kick out because it's light and is usually very used to countersteering.
Everybody knows we started the drifting craze in the snow 20 years before the imports though of it.

JasonB, can you look up my OEM list.

What are some places that sell the Dana Trac-Loc cheap? Any part numbers?

I have a 2001 QC 4.7 with 3.55's and a 9.25" rear.

There's a tag on the rear end that says what it is, gears, LSD, etc., you have to get under it though.

I think the one in the glove box is easier.

funny though, the one inside the door of the driver side is wrong about tire size, etc., from the factory.

Turbostang;
You're right and you're wrong.
There was a previous Powertrax unit that was crude and loud.
The NO-SLIP unit is a newer design and it has solved that ratcheting everyone complains about.
And NO, I am not a Powertrax salesman, I just did my research.
